MONTGOMERY, Ala.(AP)- The director of the Alabama Sheriffs Association has sent a letter to sheriffs recommending they not respond to requests from the Southern Center for Human Rights about how much money they have left after feeding inmates.

The letter comes after a federal court hearing last month showed Morgan County Sheriff Greg Bartlett amassed $316,000 over six years.

Association director Bobby Timmons says Alabama's open records law does not cover the center's request. But center attorney Melanie Velez disagrees.

The state provides sheriffs with $1.75 per day to feed each inmate. Sheriffs are allowed to keep any leftover money, but a bill has been introduced in the Legislature to change that.

Minimally saves $2 billion annually
BOP is nearing 40% over capacity
Incentive for inmate positive/appropriat e behavior
Prison overcrowding is dangerous for inmates and BOP staff.Increased good time will save the US taxpayers a minimum of $2 billion per year by taking offenders out of the prison system earlier. Good Time reduces inmate populations considerably. Currently, the BOP is approaching 40% over capacity. Today there are over 203,000 inmates in the federal systemGood Time rewards those inmates who have shown positive behavior. Although early release would not be guaranteed, it would allow a 2nd chance to those who prove they are deserving of another chance. The cost to house an inmate for 12 months is conservatively $40,000. Costs nearly double for inmates with medical issues and costs rise significantly for all inmates over age 60. Inmates do not receive the same health care and lengthy non-parolable sentences cause medical emergencies for those in facilities and huge indigent health care costs upon release. The BOP would need to hire over 13,000 staff members to meet the inmate to staff ratio of 10 years ago. Building additional bed space in prisons will not resolve the systemic issues of the prison system. The BOP is going to triple bunking because of lack of bed space, which heightens tensions and makes it more dangerous for both staff and inmates.Lengthy sentences have an inordinate impact on inmatesÂ’ families, particularly children who are forced to be raised in broken

I think the prisons would not be so crowded if they would rethink the three strikes your out policy. I also think that if a person kills someone and there are two or more eye witnesses to the crime the death penalty should be automatic, no 25 years on death row fighting for appeal after appeal. If you start killing these
ba^#%$ds the crime will rate will take a nose dive!!!

As long a you don't get witness(inmate) that are going to get a lighter sentence, if they point the finger. I do like the 3 strike thing. Sentencing someone 10 to 15 years for drug and then letting murders go free. Something is wrong!!!!

The Federal Govt incarcerates way to many small time drug offenders (Thanks to Reagan) instead of sending them to drug rehab or giving them home incarceration. Theres got to be a better answer. The United States is broke! Federal inmates should get the same oppurtunity at parole and good time as state inmates!!!
