Is Danville a good place to live?

i guess that old saying "it takes a village...." kinda has been thrown by the way side here. there are spots of town i refuse to visit in the day or night, but we also have some wonderful people in this community. i am fortunate thru my profession to have the opportunity to work with a grand scheme of folks...from the affluent doctors, lawyers, politicians, representatives, judges...down to the single moms living on welfare, homeless street bums, street thugs etc. i deal with all walks of life daily. i can tell you there have been many of days where the homeless drunk guy has stopped me on the street to say hello and comment on the weather before and never expected anything in return, while some of the snooty business people of danville pretend i dont exist. i have gained many life lessons from one particular vet that most of you would have disguarded as trash, but i can honestly say he was one of the most talented and intelligent men i had ever met...and i was proud to have considered him my friend. while he may have asked for some change now and then to purchase himself a beer he was nothing more than respectful. i would give anything to hear him tell me some of his old war stories. it was worth ever dime i donated...sit back and listen to the local business men/woman in this town....there are some that can offer some really good advice but many who just like to brag om their fortune and turn their noses up at the working class people living pay check to paycheck. you have to be willing to put effort into your community in order to make it a more desirable place...it doesnt happen over night and lord knows monsters hide around every corner....even in churches and schools. quit beating down an already struggling community....work to make it a better place!

Those "snooty" people are about to lose their country club too, it will be interested to see where the "elite" (laughing) decide to hang out once it's gone.

They've been offering people all kinds of incentives to join, but nobody wants to spend that kind of money to spend time with a bunch of jerks.

i grew up in danville in the 70s and 80s and finally got out in the 90s and have been back a few times and the town is horrible nothing for kids or adults to do the mall has nothing to offer its nothing more the a small shopping center. I grew up in the east end and i wouldnt want to live within 10 miles of their. the north end is a dump now you have to get north of the mall to get out of the ghetto. when danville had good paying jobs and the economy was booming they didnt make the city or town any better 1 public school for highschoolers and its over 100 yrs old no new jr high schools only 2 left north ridge a dump south view another dump...even the private schools are horrible they r moving them all into 1 school schlarman which when i was in town i went to a football game there and u talk about a dump...damn people pay money to send there kids there. I use to love danville but you can go 40 miles in either direction and do better danville is a dump crawfordsville which is 32 miles away and a smaller community has newr and more schools hell even the small towns in indiana have all nice schools danville will never spend money on children vermillion county is a fraud. ooh yea they have built a juvenile detention center and they have a nice big jail and a medium security prison. ooops i almost forgot they have the 3rd highest crime rate in illinois for a town the size of a suburb it has murders rapes and drugs everywhere and the hookers r cheap..lol...everyone i know that is still there wants out and i dont know anyone who loves this decayed town anymore.

and moving away did nothing for your grammar or spelling.
Seriously,if you're going to TRY to speak intelligently about a subject atleast attempt to use proper grammar and spelling.

We all know that Danville is crap, BUT no one has any plans to step and let their voice be heard about what they can do to build the community. It may never be what it once was, is it ever?

I have lived in Danville for 33 years and have a different viewpoint than many of the other posters. Having moved here from a city of more than 500,000 people, I've found the people from Danville and the surrounding areas to be friendly, outgoing and generous.
There are many things to do here including the opera, Red Mask plays, the Summer Concerts and many more. Housing is, in general, reasonably priced.
In the area, there are beautiful parks.
The only disappointment is dinning. Not very many choices and of average quality.
Schools are also just average. Having said that, of my six children, all of whom went to Danville schools, two have M.B.A.'s and three others have their college degrees. All make more than $100K/yr., so I guess they're not too bad.
Hope you enjoy your time in our city.

Personally I dont think you would want to live in Danville. I don't feel that it is a safe place to raise a child. Nothing against anyone in particular, but it's just not safe.

Personally I think you will really like Danville. I feel it is a safe place to raise a child. Name the last time a local child was abducted and/or harmed here, huh? So I feel that it is a safe place to raise a child-as I have done. Nothing against the naysayers, they just like hearing themselves talk.

Wow Dave, you sound like a very unintelligent man who has serious issues. You act like no other city has crime, poverty or social issues. Danville has it's issues but it also has countless warm-hearted, sincere, generous and bright individuals. Your words of hate and negativity are heard by all who read for what the message is and that is HATE. Danville is certainly better off without you in it. No one need sugarcoat their realities. THE REALITIES BELONG TO THE INDIVIDUAL. It is quite clear your reality must have been one of isolation and loneliness and I feel sorry for you. I moved back here to Danville from Palm Beach, FL and the community action and involvement is as alive as ever. Considering you are not here, keep your hate to yourself. For the people looking to relocate to Danville, WELCOME! Our city is a melting pot on a micro level of the demographics of this fine country and eagerly embraces new talents to add to our home on this earth. As for Dave, get Prozac, the world is not that bad and neither is Danville, IL!

hmaes has a point. I've been many places too. No matter where you live, some people love it and some hate it. I bet, if you move the haters to any other city, they would still be unhappy there.
You have to be responsible for your own happiness and one way to create happiness is to get out in the community and be a part of it. Volunteer, even for an hour a week, doing something to make someone else's life a little better. Karma is for real, it will come back to you.

As mayor I know the problem are people who are black,
They're morals, values, and work ethic they lack;
There are some I want in the sac,
But that's only because no man would have them back.
Sad to say, the best we have to offer is DACC.

You need lots of money, for high are property tax,
Crimes such as felonies are at the max;
You ask, "Where are the jobs and folks decent?"
Each alderman sobs that some good happened recent.
What about all the Section 8ers that need the ax?

After two terms and on a third, I promise it will be done,
As your mayor and confidant, I am the only one;
Lies, all lies, about cheating and betting,
All the women fib about my eating and love-letting.
You should know by now I love women who weigh a ton.

It takes so long to fix many a wrong because I'm just a DJ,
I am long on talk, but give me time and I will find the way;
Even Rome wasn't built in day,
Stop the claim that all I want is a lay!
Just sit and wait and hope and have the power to stay.

Prosperity and peace are round the corner,
The odds are great for I am not a suborner;
Who doesn't have a kid they denied, even after a woman's bray,
I'm no Dr. Wong or Nancy Grace, and who gives a hoot bout DNA.
Place your chips at the table and don't be a mourner.

D-Vegas is destined for greatness, you will see,
In the end, the Comical-News will say it is because of me;
Forget my need to unwind with some women loose,
All makes me more focused after tapping a caboose.
To the city, women, my wife, keep entrusting me for I am the key.

Rather 3 inches or 10 inches, rather honest or not,
Hard at work or golf, you will one day see a lot;
At 17 and pondering a hit, you will find it is me you need,
Besides the $100,000 paltry salary, there are fetishes to feed.
It is work, not girls gone wild, that makes my office need a double cot.

All towns have lots of crime to deal with,
Saying D-Vegas has more is just a myth;
D-Vegas has one sexy mayor with style,
Taking Viagra, he even can last awhile.
Mayor wishes we had own Joseph Smih.

Blacks look like the cause of our demise,
Yet, every watermelon is safe, it's all lies;
Hope and change will be for sure a casino,
Feral blacks just want to pop a maraschino.
Don't belittle the down low, just some guys.

Danville isn't the best or worst, it is what you make it. There is plenty in the area to do with Kickapoo and Lake Vermilion plus others. If you can't find something to do then you don't really want to do anything anyway.

It's nice that all of these people are trying to be up-beat, but I grew up in Danville, and it is one of the worst towns I've ever encountered. But don't take it from me..the crime rate is over double the national average, every year the high school graduates kids that can barely read, the police here are just as bad as the criminals and won't show up when you call them, and we have some of the lowest housing prices in the country (for good reason). At least half to 2/3 of this town is a GHETTO, and most everyone is on government assistance. People are robbed at gas stations and the grocery store, when they're not trying to sell you their food stamps.
I'm warning you, Danville is a horrible town and the people posting this crap to you are doing it because they can't admit they live in a sh*thole. IF you move here, move to Catlin, Georgetown, Oakwood, Bismarck, Rossville, or even Hoopeston.(see city-data for info in these towns..much better, especially for someone moving from a small town). They are close enough for your husband to drive to work, but get you away from all of the street thugs, and you won't be taxed to death for living in a trashy town.
If you REALLY want to know about Danville, Google "Danville IL church bombing", or "Danville IL triple homicide". These give a clearer view of Danville then middle-aged people that will tell you "crime is up everywhere, not just Danville" and sugarcoat the facts. Come visit, stay at the hotels on Lynch road and drive down Main street in the middle of the day...see all those people walking? They're not at work because they're on welfare! Drive around streets like Lake, Cronkhite, and Virginia....see all those kids walking around openly smoking weed when they should be in school.. see the cops drive by without even a second look? That's the REAL Danville.
I'm only telling you this because you have an eleven month child, and it's not fair for these people to tell you b.s. to make themselves feel better about their crappy town. You will NOT be happy here. Your child WILL end up being exposed to drugs and guns in our schools. Heck, even our STDs occur at an epidemic rate.
If you decide to move to the area, we'd be happy to have you....but NEVER buy a house or live in the immediate vicinity of Danville, Illinois unless you want to guarantee being robbed or worse, and the police doing nothing to help you. You WILL be dissapointed!
AMEN!!!! thanks for telling the truth.........
