You're absolutely right, people could have been killed and if so what do you think would be the outcome of the 93-yr old driver? Arrested and sent to jail for vehicular manslaughter? Negligent homicide? I don't think so. The victims family would suffer because no closure would come out of it. People that old should NOT be driving in the first place which would avoid any senseless deaths. This elderly driver is certainly not responsible and he should be aware of his shortcomings, or his family should step up and reason with him to quit driving.

They ALWAYS mistake the gas for the brake. ALWAYS. There are dozens of these cases every year. This time was lucky. Usually someone innocent is killed. Their brains cannot make the connections like they used to. If grandma needs help shopping, the family needs to take the car away, sell it, and use the money for a grocery delivery service like PeaPod or a similar company, or taxi money for the next several years. There are also free charities and city programs across the country that have volunteers who drive the elderly to their doctor appointments and shopping. People, TAKE YOUR GRANDPARENTS OR EDLERLY PARENTS KEYS AWAY THEY ARE NEVER GOING TO DECIDE TO STOP DRIVING THEMSELVES. They cannot realize on their own with their impaired judgement that they are not longer good at driving. Someone needs to do it FOR THEM. That is what family is for, to help each other and you will be saving their life.

Wonder if the driver has family that will help or drive him around? When my dad's vision started to go around when he turned 80 - I took his keys away. One day he used a spare set I didn't know about and took off - I called the police and told them "He cannot see!" I asked if a available/free officer saw him to stop and hold him, I would come get him. Luckily I found him and we had someone drive his car home. He never drove again - someone here made an excellent point - they live good long lives, only to hurt or injure a child or young person - I used this very point to finally convince him. He admitted it was pride, and the car was the only sense of independence he had left, but I drove him everywhere he wanted to go after that -(I was doing so before that too, but I didn't know he had a spare set of keys!) Older drivers should have yearly vision exams for licenses! Mandatory!

News Update: Police have released the name of the driver; turns out he is the infamous Edward "Ted" Kennedy of Hyannis Port, Massachusetts. The driver reportedly told the police that he thought the Wal-Mart was the world’s largest drive thru booze store.

Until we solve how seniors who should not be driving can get around, similar incideints will keep happening. There are not enough loving relatives or minimal-cost personal drivers (I run one here in SoCal)to take care of the current and upcoming wave of baby boomers. Unlike compact Europe, with its very attractive and efficient and senior-friendly mass transit systems, 90% of the US is spread out, with necessities not within walking distance. Mass transit is almost non-existent outside the big cities. Take away the need to drive to survive, and many seniors will give up their keys.

This is an example of why senior citizens should be re-tested from time to time to see if they are still capable of driving safely. Seniors have access to services that take them shopping and obviously this guy should look into it because he most likely will be the cause of another accident.
