Dead Mans Curse”.
You see, as the story allegedly goes, a man here in Deer CreekIllinois was so
emotionally hurt that he put a Curse upon this area. As it has been told and
retold these past few years, teenagers just learning to drive will die all over
Tazewell County in freak accidents, cancer and other diseases will haunt
Deer Creek Residents, freak accidents will take place, tires will go flat for no
reason, nails will rain from the sky, boils will suddenly appear, stray
bullets from hunters rifles will find their way into the homes of those who
live here, dogs suddenly will turn on their masters, young people will
grow up wanting to flea from this area to live elsewhere, businesses
will fail, solid old marriages will fail, and a time will come that the winds
will blow so hard it will destroy two third’s of the entire town. This man’s
residence has grown to be known as “Hell’s Half Acre” and all who live there
or walk upon it’s soil will suffer a terrible fait. As the story goes, a boulder, a
headstone, past down for generations was stolen and buried here in Deer Creek
and until this simple boulder is placed upon this man’s grave, all forms of evil
will run thru the homes of those who live here. Some say it’s this boulder that
leaches out the very evil that spoils the waters of Deer Creek. Others say they
have seen this man walking in the park at night, and sometimes, local farmers
have seen him walking down corn rows at harvest time. And on Halloween,
some say they have seen him jump out of a pile of leaves. At night, on “Hells
Half Acre”, sometimes, when the stars are really clear, some say you can see
him crying in his yard and other nights screaming at the full moon. Others say he
he walks around at night carrying a sledge hammer, wearing a mask of an
old man with grey hair and has deep red eyes. But of all these alleged stories
and sightings, take notice, because the park at night is no place to be when
“Hell’s Half Acre” is under the Southern Sky. Of course, it’s only a story,
So unless you are superstitious, I guess we are all safe. But it has continued to
be an interesting conversation here in Deer Creek especially among our
young people.
