Does "innovation" include the mass layoffs that happened at Boehringer today? Ms. Dawkins, a followup, please.

Does "innovative" mean age bias. Over 50? Don't apply!

Thats a joke. Age bias is the most difficult form of discrimination to prove as the reason for not hiring you BUT google "age discrimination" and see how after 40 you chances of finding a job decrease by nearly 67 percent. As an HR Profesional you should know this as well. A former B-I manager confirmed this last year when he spoke to a group of older scientists. He said that only the young ones make it to the final round interview - no sour grapes -just a fact of life.

Hey, how many "non-innovators" were over 50? I hear all but 2 or 3. Fact or rumor?

Actually there were layoffs. I would know because my family member was one of them. EllenLynn was correct.

No they were not layoffs. I work in R&D. They were let go because of non-performance or not meeting the needs of the business plan.
Business plans change - technical expertise requirements change. That is when reorganizations occur. Unfortunate and sad that it is for those let go. Recruitment for those positions will occur.

What "sensitive" timing of this news article. Did those who were "eliminated" get severance packages?

These are business decisions, made months ago, and companies all over the nation are doing this. 30-40 layoffs means nearly $3 million in savings. When was the last time you heard of someone being offered early retirement, or retiring at actual retirement age, if they were NOT a member of a union or worked for some government?

Just wish these people had been given some type of notice. I heard they were sent to HR or their boss, thinking they were having an end-year review or to sign some newly-required paper, and were then actually escorted out by security! I cannot believe such treatment occurs today, among people with MBAs and PhDs. Shame on them!
