Popeye's Chop House: Take a drive to rustic St. Rose restaurant

There are 40 comments on the Belleville News-Democrat story from Jun 16, 2007, titled Popeye's Chop House: Take a drive to rustic St. Rose restaurant. In it, Belleville News-Democrat reports that:

“The bar part has been around since the 1800s. At one time, it was a barber shop”

With thick juicy steaks and rustic decor, Popeye's Chop House in St. Rose is an ideal place for Pop.

'We serve people what we like to eat,' said owner Dwight Rutz, 55, as server Casey Mosby brought out a platter with a 16-ounce steak filet and scorpion salmon stuffed with a cream cheese filling.

The restaurant opens at 4 p.m. today, Father's Day.

Drive past green pastures and farmhouses on St. Rose Road (just north of U.S. 50) until you see a building with tan siding and smell the aroma of beef being grilled. Read more

I'm sorry you had a bad experience but I can tell you that in the decade or so that I've been eating there, the food has been nothing but great. If there was ever a time that my family had a problem, the Rutz' have always taken care of it.

You got a salad and drink for $0.00. I am curious tho...what in the world happened
so that they actually called you "hostile"????

i asked for a new steak - when the second one came out well done, i spoke with a manager and told him this was unacceptable - all he wanted to do was argue about how wrong i was. i never raised my voice and never got snotty - the least he could have done was ask if i wanted a different meal, but all he did was call me hostile and tell me i was mistaken because he looked at the steak in the light and it was red in the middle (which it wasn't). both the manager and the waitress were horribly rude to me with no provocation other than my expectation of getting a steak cooked to order. with the outrageous prices they charge, their service isn't worth a dime!

as for my "free" salad and iced tea, it was not impressive enough to even warrant comment.

Why did you not ask for something else? Also, au jus is defined as "a thin sauce for using with beef. It is not thick like many sauces or gravies." What were you expecting? I go to Popeyes often, and they always seem to be very busy. Must be that crappy service and food that keep people coming in during this down economy. What did the rest of the table think of their meals?

I do have two further questions:
#1. Are you married?
#2.What would have made this dining trip good?

Popeye's has been a fabulous place to eat for many years. The staff and management have always been friendly and gone out of their way to make sure everything was done properly. People like Rene Dillon will always find something to complain about. That's just the way some people are.

I never understood why people go to this place. The only reason I can think of is that locals around this area don't like to venture out further then ten miles from home. Get out and experience what's out there. There is a whole other world outside of Clinton county. It's not that great of food at Popeyes. Broaden your horizons a little people!

No - no. Ya'll don't understand. Chop House bringing in folks from Centralia, Carlyle, G-town, Edsville, even St Louis, Missouri. Everybody who has been at the Chop House comes back. Not many locals there at all. You've got it wrong. Great food, large menu, friendly folks, all good.
