Popeye's Chop House: Take a drive to rustic St. Rose restaurant

There are 40 comments on the Belleville News-Democrat story from Jun 16, 2007, titled Popeye's Chop House: Take a drive to rustic St. Rose restaurant. In it, Belleville News-Democrat reports that:

“The bar part has been around since the 1800s. At one time, it was a barber shop”

With thick juicy steaks and rustic decor, Popeye's Chop House in St. Rose is an ideal place for Pop.

'We serve people what we like to eat,' said owner Dwight Rutz, 55, as server Casey Mosby brought out a platter with a 16-ounce steak filet and scorpion salmon stuffed with a cream cheese filling.

The restaurant opens at 4 p.m. today, Father's Day.

Drive past green pastures and farmhouses on St. Rose Road (just north of U.S. 50) until you see a building with tan siding and smell the aroma of beef being grilled. Read more

On our last visit from New Jersey, we had the pleasure and most enjoyable meal at Popeye's. It sure was worth the trip and we suggest that you should also stop in for a meal anytime you are in the neighborhood. We plan to stop in again this summer when we will again be in the St. Rose area.

From start to finish, top to bottom the best resteraunt in the area. The service and quality of food greatly exceeds the price. There hasn't in my experiance been a resteraunt that the owner makes it a point to greet everyone at some point and make sure they are satisfied. The servers perform like they take pride in serving you [results of good management]. We make it a point to go for any family birthday or such gathering. If you like excellent food with many options in a very comfortable, friendly environment it's a must try. I'll bet you'll wish you had found it sooner.

I used to work there in the early 90's. Was a great place to eat then. Glad to see things haven't changed.

George, Larry, Little brother Jimmy and Tom Rogers, what a blast from the past, I remember them well, but not a chance they are the same, I hear George died years ago, Larry and Vicki divorced, Jimmy stayed in music in different ways, same as Larry and Tom just moved on to other things. Thanks for the memory though.
