Why is it that Damascus can find the money to support the hikers but can't find the money to open the town pool for the kids to have something to do this summer? It is outrageous. The kids need something to do and somewhere to go during the summer. If they can't find the money to make sure the pool is open, then no one should pay their taxes. That money is supposed to go for the Damascus residents and not the hikers.

The pool has a leak and they have to repair it. Which means they will probably have to dig it up and replace the pipes. Which means it won't be open this year. Buy your kid a book.

Sorry, or go to the library.

Because that's what a kid that sits around all day while they are in school reading books needs to do..sit around and read another book!Whatever.

I agree that the town needs something for the residents to be able to enjoy. It's pathetic that the town is all about the hikers and tourists that it can attract, but for the citizens that actually pay the taxes and buy things from the town year round...well they do not care about us. So, we should all just drive to Abingdon and spend our money. While you're there you may consider taking your child to the Coomes Center or the Abingdon pool. Either way...hey pool! And, give the money to the town that actually has activities, and the people over the town are actually smart enough to realize that the people are what makes the town...not the tourists.

Reading is great, but for a child who has so little free time, and is looking forward to Summer...yeah, buying a book is a lame suggestion when kids need to be active. Buy them a audio book and let them get outside!

To WII: I don't guess you have any kids or otherwise you wouldn't say "Go to the Library". You can only read so much a day. Kids need to be active. The Town made sure that the hikers had a good time this year. The Mayor should have been aware of the problem and fixed it before time for the pool to open. So many idiots on the town council.

What part of "dig it up and replace the pipes" do you not understand? That will cost tens of thousands of dollars and take months to do.

Maybe if the kids took advantage of the hundreds of miles of trails that run through the area maybe they would enjoy it. There are plenty of places to hike, bike, and fish. There are also several swimming holes in the various rivers that flow through town. You don't have to be a tourist to enjoy and use the resources that the town offers. The tourists don't come here to shop they come to hike, bike, and fish.

The town doesn't do a lot for the hikers. The churches, outfitters, and other businesses sponsor most all of the events during trail days. The many volunteers make the event work and the "Town" makes it all happen. The money they take in pays for what they do.

Will you are an idiot.
The New Mayor should have already fixed the darn pool. This town is only for the hikers, I'm sure they knew the pool had a leak for a while now afterall they open the pool showers fr the stinking hikers.

To helllo:

Thank you very much. The town plans all year for the hikers. I very much agree that the pool should have already been fixed. Not all of us can afford a pool in our backyard. Not all of us have an entire day to devote to fishing, hiking, etc. Most of us have to spend all day working to pay the town taxes.

They plan on having to pool open by the middle of the summer. The person that replaced the liner two years ago and he didnt do a good job and the leak came back. They are in the process of getting it fixed and hope to have it up and running as soon as possible.

justforfun, why would it take an entire day to fish, hike, etc.? You can hike for as long as you want, bike for as long as you want, and fish for as long as you want. Fishing poles are cheap, everyone has shoes, a lot of kids have bikes.

Do you leave your kid at the pool all day? I guess it is pretty cheap babysitting.

I know the pool is a great place for kids to be in the summer. They should have started the job awhile back having it ready for the kids when school was out. If this company that replaced it before is replacing it for a smaller sum I can understand maybe the scheduling was bad, (2years sounds like shotty work and should hve some kind of guarantee) but if they are paying the full amount they should have found someone to GET IT DONE SOONER. My kids loved the pool many years ago and as teenagers I didn't worry about them going to the pool while I was at work. Letting your kids go to the pool is a whole lot safer (mind wise) than being on the trail or in the river without a lifeguard or adult supervision. I see your point of other things to do, because too many sit in the house playing videos all day which to me is a big waste of time.

The town pool isn't for "babysitting" children left home alone while parents are at work. Should the town be in charge of paying lifeguards so they can watch your kids while you work? That is what has happened at the pool for many years. Parents should pay for their own babysitter. Then maybe your babysitter could take your child on a picnic or hike on the Appalachian Trail or bicycle with your child on the Creeper Trail....on your dime.

Maybe the stinking hikers should wash in the creek and not on the town's dime, A-hole!

LOL- the last time I took my kids to the town pool there was an admission fee to swim? I even paid although I did not use the water, just stayed and "watched" my kids- Its obvious you are ignorant to the need of a town pool. Why don't you go hug a tree and have a wonderful day..........

LOL ---Did you read the word TEENAGERS, I don't believe 16 is in need of a babysitter. For your info when my children were small they had a paid babysitter while I worked. No the pool is not a place to babysit the kids. You need to read before you snap!!!My children did go swim at the pool with the other kids that stayed at the sitters and take swimming lessons then became lifeguards along with about 4 of the others that grew up with them. The pool is a wonderful place for kids and I stand by what I said, it should have been scheduled before now to have been fixed for the summer. LOL, you need to comprehend what someone writes before you blow off about what you know nothing about......

In reguards to the swimming holes around town for the kids to use......well let ne tell you about swimming in the river my child went swimming last year at backbone in the river, and got biten by what the doctor suspects was a horse fly of some sort. My child had a bump/blister to come up on his arm it kept getting bigger till it burst and guess what another one showed up, then another, and another.....long story short we had 6 rounds of antibotics and permanent scaring from these bumps. Not to mention broken glass snakes and other debris people put into the river.

Will......I am betting you dont have kids "go to the library" that is a joke have you been into a school to see the teaching they get these days its all about money they push the SOLs so much that the learning experience is a joke. The higher the school as a whole make on SOLs the more grant money the schools receive, they are timed on all testing, required to test on several books they read each week its push, push to meet state requirements so they can get more money. These kids need to have a good time and enjoy the summer so they will be excited to return to school in August not resent going to school.

Okay, since reading and learning are out of the question why not encourage their creativity. Drawing, painting, music, photography, video, etc...

Why is it the governments responsibility to entertain the youth of America?

The SOL's are a joke (thank's Bush). But its not that the schools get more money its that they get less money for basic needs (i.e. windows, heat, food,etc...) if the kids do not meet the standard of minimal competency.

Just Thinkin, point taken. Sorry for your horse fly incident.

What was wrong with my last post?

Why is it someone else's responsibility to entertain your children?
