Okay, so we built this fancy new library/visitor's center. BUT....it's only open a half day on Saturday and closed on Sunday. Is that temporary or what? Why the heck would we pay to build a new library and only people that don't work get to use it? And if most of the visitors to the town are here on weekends..why is it that the visitor's center is closed most of the weekend? Heck, we might have just kept the old one.
the library should be open at least 9-5 on Saturday and 1-5 on Sunday.
Maybe I should be mayor. Well, except for my sinister criminal past...:)

Well if there is a bitch and complain department, I'm sure it's only open when no one can get there.....like the library.

Take the elevator to the seventh floor, that is where bitch and complain is located

Thanks for the helpful information. I suppose you are one of the people that think it's smart to build a visitor's center and then have it closed when the most visitors are in town...good thinking!

oh well.

You know, I think that this is a really good point. Damascus is much different than the other library communities, plus the library has a visitor's center. Close it down a couple of early days during the week and open it on weekends. I think that the suggestions are valid and are really quite positive - not bitching and complaining. It's a wonderful building, let's show it off!

Actually, this idea started back right before we had that last winter storm watch. I went over to the library about three in the afternoon , thinking I would get a couple of books in case tv went out, etc....and it was closed. I can't remember if it was Sat. or Sun., but I was thinking how weird it was that the library and visitor's center would be closed on a weekend day.
The funny thing is that my first thought was maybe they didn't want a bunch of people using the bathroom on weekend days or something...lol..otherwise it really is odd.

This must be one of the couch laying, mouth breathing, lazy arse, welfare taking non- workers from Damascus that have all the time in the world to go to the library.

... Except they don't.

In the winter it only gets worse for the working people. The new winter hours will be Mon. Wed. Friday 9 - 5. Tues and Thurs 10-6. Sat. 9-1 and closed on Sunday. Do people not use the library more in the winter than in the summer? How do these hours fit your working schedule?

I could conceivably visit on Saturday mornings. That's it. Got other things to do too. Agree with the initial post.

This would be the answer - close it a couple of days during the week and keep it open on the weekend. As hard as jobs are to get I am sure someone would be willing to work the weekend shifts if the employees there do not want to work on the weekends. At least the working tax payers could get something for their money too.

I imagine they could get a couple of part-time employees for the weekends..maybe even a grant....or some volunteers. Or.......maybe one of the 35 council members we have for this town of 1000.
Or.....relocate the town secretary and treasurer to the visitor's center? Then that space could be used by fire and police.
Or....give us all a key.....:)

This is a 1.6 million dollar facility. It sure will be a waste if everyone is not given the opportunity to use it just because it is not open on the weekends and in the evening when people could go. I do hope that the people in Damascus that have children will take advantage of the opportunities that the new library offer. I sure wish I had had a nice place like it to go when I was growing up.

Maybe put one of the 12 police officers in there to "patrol" at night (they could check out books while waiting on something to happen). I think the Damascus Dept. of Defense could afford that in their $350,000 budget.

No, there are not 12 officers on the DPD. They just do the work of 12 men so it makes it look like there are more.

$350,000 police dept budget for a town with 956 residents. Ludicrous!

Who is paying for this 350,000 budget? Did it come from grants the PD had applied for or Damascus residents taxes?

I work 60 hours a week. Monday thru Friday and half of Saturday. I've never, ever, ever, seen the library open. Wish I could.

350,000 budget mostly comes from Federal dollars - started by Bush, upheld by Obama. Don't all towns need that Homeland Security money? Prior to 9/11, Damascus had one full time and one part-time officer. 2 cars. Look now. Homeland Security dollars. Federal spending. Aren't we much safer?
