The for-sale listings on the online hub Craigslist come with plaintive notices, like the one from the teenager in Georgia who said her mother lost her job and pleaded, "Please buy anything you can to help out." ...

LOL well if you brought Versace and Hermes items and now you have to sell them, the probably you should not have been buying them from the start.

Exactly. I don't feel bad for you if you have to sell your Dooney and Burke handbags to make ends meet. They should be saving that money in the first place, not trying to emulate some stupid celebrity's horrible taste in handbags! My husband and I make over $100k a year and I have never spent more than $20 on a purse (I buy most of them at Target). There are people who legitimately are in trouble now, but others will just have to learn within their minds like they should have been doing all along!

I probably need to read the story, but maybe their lifestyle previously supported a designer fashion taste. By the way 2 working people making $100K a year is far far from rich.

I wasn't saying I was rich, I was saying I can afford a designer purse if I want to. We don't have kids, both have used cars, and live in an apartment. So, we have a lot of expendable income per year. You misunderstood my point, which was that we save our money instead of buying things we don't need.
And they may not have said it in this article, but I work in the default services industry so I know for a fact how many people making less than $30k per year buy designer handbags and BMWs then lose their house to foreclosure or declare bankruptcy. Who do you think eats the cost when they do this crap? The taxpayers! and yet, that person gets to keep their deisgner stuff and skip out on the tab. I'm sick of it adn you should be too.

Actually two people making over $100k per year who live below their means and invest are generating wealth. In my book when you have wealth, you are rich.

The idea of saving and not spending on impulse seems to be a foreign concept to most Americans.

Would it be just too tacky to expect people to put away some money during the good times so they don't have to hock granny's tea kettle for gas money when times get tough?

I would fly the coupe too if my lady was buying scratch-offs with her lunch money.....a sign of too high maintenance.
