I worked for dollar general and it was terrible, although I was only there for four months I had been sexually harrased my second month, on my third month I was robbed at gun point standing at my till and my fourth month they wanted to fire me for money being stuck in the safe because a cashier rolled her money up and tried to shove it in there, dollar general needs to shut down all together, they have ruined my life, those people don't care about you at all, If anyone is considering a job there please dont.

To add to the list, there is a DG store in Wetumpka Al that does not carry any black hair care products or black make up. I asked the manager why and her reply was" when the store was built the owner didn't think many blacks would shop there". Seriously, that is the craziest thing ever. Every time I shop there, I see nothing but blacks!!! The NAACP will need to investigate this one.

Is it acceptable if a store manager cuts your hours to were you make 70 something dollars for a paycheck? It was said that they do that because they have a grudge against an employee.I don't want to complain but how can I pay my bills if I'm barely making any money? Is there a number to call and ask about this?
When I was a store manager we were told to only offer 9 aprox. hours a week. Then we would end up calling people in when the DM would find 'extra hours'. It's part of their game. It's stupid but that's how it worked here in Michigan anyhow. Also if you do something they do not like, the SM will get rid of you by only giving you 1 shift a week.

Your store manager is not well informed and that's racist. Your store falls under a category with the demographics of the area your are in. A lot goes into that. Depending on the size of the store and so on. Every store I worked in had a black hair care section. They did remove one I was at due to lack of sales and replaced it by expanding a department that was making $$$.

DM's have the say so. I was only required to work 1 night, which was funny because I ended up working nearly everynight to get things done they expected. But it can fall on you dm's shoulders. Also Asst. managers were schedule in for 4 nights a week. That was the corporate way to schedule.

Got my Personal Improvement Plan today, all 4 pages of it. The day after I confront my DM for harassing behavior, running off or firing 1/2 the district and just being a general bully. Unbelievable that the day after you talk to HR, RM about DM you get written up to Nth degree. I turned my store to positive comp and near model rating from in the red and unacceptable in roughly 6 months. I did this with the help of good people, not by trying to break everyone. Can't fight it from inside the store. Need rest of 350/17 to voice their complaints...
I had a pip given after I made them give me my yearly bonus. The Sm and the DM put my name on a store that was not mine and was not making money, and put that store manager's name on mine, that was profitable. Their excuse was The other manager was going to come to my store once I ws transferred to another district, then since I had moved to be closer to my new store and things took more time than they had thought, they paid my milage. When bonus came around at the meeting to announce that, he was praised for the sales at MY store, I was there for 10 months! He ended up with my bonus, so I had to go to corporate to get that bonus, the SM and DM both got into trouble for pulling this thing. I got the bonus and then I gat a pip. MY store at the time was number 1 in the district for 12 weeks in a row and NEVER fell out of the top 3 in the district. I got injured on the job and when I came back they terminated me. Thanks to DG, I have bought a new home, furnished it grandly, bought a brand new car and have lots of $$$$ to travel when ever I want. It took me 2 years in workmans comp. court, but they paid for it. Now I never have to work again and it's great. Smooth move DG! lol

basically they are right. you can't be a keyholder if you have other things going on. you are always on call if you are a manager. period. no exceptions. I have no college and I'm only 20 years old and I'm a SM. I have EXPERIENCE though. years of it. that's probably why you are getting passed
Haha. I worked there three years and the last time management was changed they made two people who had been there for 3 months the store manager and assistant manager. I tried for two years for AM. This particular store has had 6 managers and 3 Am in that 3 years I was there. I was the only one left from when I got hired. They passed me up because I spoke up when employees where stealing and when we had managers breaking every rule in the book. This poor girl was probably passed up for all the wrong reasons. I left for a much better company that offers so much more to its employees and only promotes people who deserve it and who are qualified. Its not about how well the DM feels about you personally but on how well u do your job. So glad im out of this place. How dare they have employees in the system as part time but condemn u when u are not available for full time hours. Make the employee a full time employee in the system and play them their well deserved benefits! I averaged 34 hours for 6 month at one time but they kept me as a part time and I got zero benefits. I ran that store when they were trying to find yet another manager and assistant but I didnt see no paid vacation coming my way working as much as I did. Company is a joke. My 3 years of slave labor paid off. I now hold keys at another company and make 3.25 more an hour to start then I did at DG after 3 years!

Congratulations on getting out of that Hell Hole!! You are basically right they do pay you slave labor wages. I worked there for 20 years and 8 months. I had an POS DM that tried everything he could to fire me for 3 years and finally got the job done. You know that paper trail they have to make. Well he did all his little steps so he could fire me. But guess what best thing he could of ever done for me. Got new job 8-4 no weekends no holidays and appreciate a good worker and love it. I am so glad you got out of that place too!! The best thing DG workers could do is get the Hell out of there now!!! They once again lost a great worker!!! Maybe one day they'll realize that they are running the best workers they got off!!! But I doubt it!!! Them corporate people don't have a clue and choose to ignore the shit they should pay attention to!! But that's what you get when you throw a bunch of illiterate uneducated F******* ego trippin idiots in charge!!! That pretty much sums up that entire company!! SO GLAD MY DM FIRED ME BEST THING HE COULD HAVE EVER DID!!! I WOULD LIKE TO SHAKE HIS HAND AND THEN SPIT IN HIS FACE!!! So glad for you bye bye dg!!

Hey dg employees! Question big concern, is it illegal for a dollar general store manager to make me step down or demote me? From full time LSA to part time LSA. Just so our old ex asst. manager can come back take her old job back. Because she can't handle being store manager at another store. She wants to come back. So our asst manager is willing to step down if I step back down to part time LSA so she can get back her position well (MINE). Ugh I'm so pissed but how on earth everyone at the store knew before me. I come back to work after I had two days off. Everyone knew I was shocked what the he......double hockey sticks. Advice?has this happened to anyone? I'm so upset!!

I've worked for the company for 8 years now, I love it. Store Manager for 4 years. You all are a bunch of babies. If you can't control a team of 5-10 members, how do you expect to be a leader for a larger company.

I worked for Dollar general for 8 years and I was terminated on feb 21st as my DM said I allowed my assistant to work off the clock the thing is I was working 70 to 80 hrs a week and had not had a day off since Christmas I called my DM on about the 12 of feb. telling her I was bleeding heavily and could not help my assistant at register she refused to get us help from another store as I could not leave the bathroom. On feb 14th and 15 I told her I would have to have someone with me as I could not quarantee this would not happen again and I was really weak she told me to do what I had to do On Feb 21st she termenated me and I finally had time to go to my DR. My hemaglobin was at a 6.7 and it supposed to be a 13 I have now been diagnosed with endometrial cancer which ws why I was bleeding so much. I had the top inventory in my district for years and the top PIA but when we get sick this DM finds any reason to term no matter how good and dedicated you are

I read a lot of these comments, and it makes me sad to know of all these bad experiences people have had. I personally have a great DM, and have been a SM for 2.5 years. I think it really depends on the DM and who your managers are. The one thing I learned is its all about who you hire, I went from working 70 hours in the beginning working all the time, to 45 hours consistently every week.

While this isn't the case for everyone, I feel like they promote a lot of underqualified people to run stores and these are the people who are fired and complain. Remember, I'm not saying everyone.

I usually always max out bonuses and my raises are great, and my base is very high (its the area I am in, I know some new SM's can make only $34,000, but some stores can pay up $45-50K), my DM takes care of me. Its too bad the people with bad DM's can't see what its like to have a caring, qualified one.

illegal? Definitely not, remember at will employment. You could be fired because the SM didn't like how you picked up a box, BUT the company has policies in place so that can not happen.

If you aren't on any performance write ups , then I would say no, I would complain and call the numbers you need to call. That would never fly at my store, I would never do that to one of my workers. Anyways, I would say no I do not want to be demoted, and go from there.

Good luck

I have been working for Dollar General almost a month. Today I was fired. According to my store manager my drawer was short $31 last week and $4 this week, which I don't believe is true. I am very good at math and check my money twice before I give customers their change. Also if this money was "missing" why did it take a week for it to be brought to my attention. I really believe something shady is going on, but I don't know what my next step should be. I was lied on and wrongfully terminated with no proof that I took the money, and no proof that I gave any customers extra money. I'm not the only one who touches my drawer so who's to say that someone else didn't take the money.

I have been working at the Dollar General for 4 months, but I have 27 years experience in retail, when I asked for an imcrease in pay and for a higher position I was denied and my hours were cut. I have been working full time hours on part time pay. The employees at our store are either related or are in relationships with each other, I am the one that comes in on time, work on my days off when called in and do all the crappy jobs that no one wants to,which isn't part of my job. The Dollar General DM is worthless to the company cause he over looks what is going on, the SM and Asst SM are friends along with all the other employees, except for me. This job has been nothing but a headache and stressful for me,since I am the only person who works while everyone else goofs off.

Of course you're fired no call no show. It is your job to call or have someone call. Then if you miss 3 days in a row you will need a doctors excuse.

When I owned my small business if the drawer wasn't short or if the drawer came over I swore they were stealing.

If it is against Co. policy why do they continue to do it? Whats it going to take for them to make it safer for these employees?
