I AGREE 98% OF THE PEOPLE THAT ARE HOMELESS ARE TO LAZY TO WORK, USE IT AS AN EXCUSE. THERE ARE JOBS TO BE FOUND, MAY BE NOT 600 A WEEK, BUT TAKE ANY JOB YOU CAN FIND AND WORK YOUR WAY UP EVEN WORKING AT MICKEY D'S IT'S A PAY CHECK. GET INTO AN APPT. YOU WILL HAVE AN PAY CK EVERY WEEK KICK THE DRUG HABIT AND THE DRINKING HABIT. WITH MONEY EVERY WEEK YOU WILL NOT BE HOMELESS. ONE DAY AN PERSON WAS ASKING WILL WORK FOR FOOD ACROSS THE STREET WAS AN SIGN HIRING FOR HELP. I TOLD THE PERSON THERE'S A JOB ACROSS THE STREET AT MICKEY D'S HE LOOKED LIKE HE WAS TO PROUD TO TAKE THAT JOB. TO ME IT'S STUPID TO BE HOMELESS WORK 2/3 JOBS IF YOU HAVE TO . I AGREE THAT SOME PEOPLE ARE HOMELESS BECAUSE OF SOME MENTAL PROBLEMS BUT NOT ALL OF THEM.
What about people like myself that has done a few years is prison for my bad choices I"ve made but now that I am 51 years old, moved to Va in 2011 trying to go straight , luckily I don"t do drugs nor do I drink, and I still can"t get a good job because of my criminal background checks,NO violent charges,No sex crimes, and No drug crimes, only property charges ,a lot of burglaries/grand theft ,and to beat it all,I haven"t had a felony conviction since 1991 and society is still not willing to let me get my act together in which all I want is a decent job and live a productive life like you or any other human being, just isn"t fair, however I will never give up hope and will do whats necessarily to survive, dumpster dive-what ever but you can bet your bottom dollar that I will not/and quote;( WILL NOT )let these obsticles turn me back into a criminal, drug addict or a drunk,if you think that living on the street is harsh try living 30 years around nothing but criminals and still get out alive with only one ( 1 )goal to reach , NEVER GO BACK ,NEVER GO BACK - BODE2007 .

Good answer ,I am on the verge of being homeless but I refuse to beg on a corner as I do have a bicycle and I will first find a good safe spot in the brush somewhere and then find neighborhoods that I will ask people if I can clean there yards, whatever , explain my situation , that alone has some merrit to it at least then I could feel good about myself ,I do not drink any type of alchohol, nor do I do drugs , definetly WILL NOT still anything , because my problem is my problem and I WILL NOT except handouts from society. I too have lived the homeless life in Tampa. I did it by choice. You have no idea the things you can learn from some of these everyday people who are constantly looking for work and trying to make it in the world. I can honestly say I'm glad i experienced this. It makes me so thankful for the things i do have. I would even do it again! Living a life without worrying about the materialistic things that we treat like gods is amazing! You meet the nicest people as well. Just because you don't know them or their situation doesn't mean you have the right to talk down on them just because you have your fancy SUV or fancy condos. I'm glad that they have this city for those less fortunate. God is the only one who has the right to judge these people. How dare you think you can take His right. Like others are saying, give up everything you have once and see how they live before you point fingers. Like Bob Marley once said “Who are you to judge the life I live? I know I'm not perfect and I don't live to be. But, before you start pointing fingers, make sure your hands are clean.”

As Christians, we all have one assignment given to us by Jesus, "Feed my Sheep." Anyone who is celebrating the Christmas holiday and calls themselves Christian should help the homeless and the poor. I hope Tampa does the same to help their homeless. Thank you Catholic Charities for stepping up!
jesus did not say feed my sheep.
He said "love one another as I have love thee." he blessed the poor and the hungry

Jim, It seems you have a pretty jaded outlook & a lack of compassion. Also it must ha been a while since you have been looking for work or you were blessed with an uncommon opportunity. I have been looking for work for almost 2 months now & I just got called for an interview today! I am not being choosy. I even applied at allthe fast food chains and didnt even get a call back from any of them. There are sooo many people competing for the very few jobs. Its not like all you have to do is apply wherever you see a "help wanted" sign & poof you get a job. Also 99% of places have to be applied online which is an issue for someone who is homeless, then you need a phone # to be called back. Not many homeless people have phones. These are just a few of the obsticles faced by the homeless to get a job nowadays. You might consider changing your view of these unfortunate people & try to show some empathy & understanding. Then your heart will be ready to love them & help them. You never know if you will find yourself in a similar situation & requireing help or at least non-judgement. Anything less is just adding insult to injury. You never know what has led to their situation & if you can do nothing else for them, you can always pray for them, which is exactly whay I will do for you!!!

To "The truth is out there" , Yes Jesus did say to "feed my sheep" He also said to "feed my lambs". Look up John 21:15 & John 21:17. God bless you!!!

I have been living at Tent City for 4 months. Never thought I'd be homeless. I have spent 30 years in the resturant business. I cannot compete with 20 and 30 years old. I have integrity so moving in with a total stranger is out of the question. Sex for lodging is out of the question. I have sought employment since last February with a car, on the internet, thru word of mouth. No job; not even call backs and I am not a felon nor do I have any lesser charges. I don't drink or drug and I'm not walking around hundreds of pounds overweigh and dirty. Tent city is far better than most of the other alternatives but try sleeping in a summer tent when its 35 to 40 degrees outside and inside the tent. Try dealing with 300 total strangers with all kinds of agendas, some not good at all. What has happened to America Homeless at 61
finally old enough to retire. Now have decent income, own aptment, reunited with pets. Most grateful to tent city & Gina Z
