I've heard and read that a teacher Mr Grande was shot in the face by a student who was unhappy with a graded quiz and he had recieved back in 1972

What ever happened to the 16 year old kid that shot Mr. Grande in 72 ? I think his last name was Perk ? did he ever come back to stow ? Ever amount to anything ? Did Mr Grande get anything after he sued the kids parents ? Did stow take any precautions in school secruity after this ?

I know of this incident but only because my older brother (now deceased) helped Mr. Grande after the shooting. I was only 9 and couldn"t tell you anything else about it.

If I recall the shooter was upset with B he had recieved on a quiz. I've often wondered whatever happened to James Perk , nobody seems to know. That was way before my time, before I was even born. Perhaps he's just living his life quietly in tranquility long relieved from schools days long past.

I was 11 when that happened, over the years I've asked my brothers friends who were in High school at the time whatever happened to Perk ? I've asked a lot different people and nobody seems to know whatever became of him. Somebody about about 15 years ago who knew his parents but not him said he had passed away. Who knows ? He was probably sent to mental institution being he was 16 and demented as oppossed prison I would guess

First off his last name is Purk not Perk. I'm not sure where he is these days, I haven't seen him 1972.

He was aloof when you first talked to him but once you got to know him he'd open up a bit. He was into mechanics and radios, he used to tell stories about his dad miltary days and when he used live in Kentucky. The day he shot Grande I was sick with the flu. Like everybody else I shocked that this could happen. These days it happens all too often.

I didn't know Mr. Grande sued his parents. I enjoyed having him as a teacher, everyone else talked about how harsh he was, called him the dictator. seems like I remember a lot of people were concerned about Purk's well being and mental state too. It wasn't a lets hang em high kinda of mentality.

I haven't asked or thought about Purk for many years, I too wonder what happened to him. I know he used to live on Uniondale.

I have thought of this incident a lot with all of the school shootings recently. James was always different. I was in the classroom and we were taking a quiz. Purk walked out of the school after the shooting and put the gun to his head. The principle talked him down and they took him away. Mr. Grande survived and never lost consciousness. The bullet deflected to his jaw. We did first aide until the medics arrived. Then they sent us all home. I never knew what happened to Purk.

I hadn't thought about him until lately either Angela. James was alittle shy but I didn't think of him being different in a scary or threatening way. He was what you might call a bit of a nerd.

I too was in the room when Mr. Grande was shot. I've also thought about that day with the recent school shootings. I can still remember quite vividly sitting in the back row, taking the quiz, the sound of the shot, all of us looking up and seeing Mr. Grande with his hands to his face, realizing he had been shot when Purk walked out of the room with the gun in his hand. All of us sent to the cafeteria and then gathered in an empty class room to fill out the witness reports for the police. Being introduced by the Principal to the young subsitute teacher who was nervous as hell being with our class.

That day changed forever my opinion on gun control and how I can, without hesitation, protect my family, friends and colleagues with deadly force because I will not allow it again.

I knew Jim since elementary school at Fishcreek. We weren't real close but I considered him a friend. It was a between the eyes shot from the back of the room (about 25 ft.). Thank goodness for the horn ried glasses that deflected the bullet into the jaw. I was sitting right to the left of Jim (next to last row against the far wall) in class and was the last one to speak to him before the shooting. I remember asking him if he was ready for the quiz, and he said "It won't make any difference." I thought he meant that the quiz wouldn't affect his grade. Also, I never noticed he had a gym bag.(No gym in 11th grade. I was still taking the test when I heard a "firecracker" go off. I looked over and Jim was standing in the aisle pointing the gun at Mr. Grande. I thought it was a joke at first. He slowly lowered the gun and calmly walked out of the room. A couple of people ran up to help Mr. Grande and I was the one who went to the office to get help. I remember running at full speed as I reached the door and had to hold on to the door jamb to make the turn. As I turned into the hall I remember thinking "What if he's there waiting to shoot the first person coming out the door." Luckily, he wasn't! I got Mr. VanGilder and we both ran back toward the classroom. As we neared the classroom, somebody said that Jim was in the front yard. We got to the front door and Mr. VanGilder told me to stay where I was. Jim was outside with the gun to his head. Mr. VanGilder just walked over to Jim, held his hand out and said "Give me the gun". I don't know if Mr. VanGilder was one of the bravest men I ever knew or was a fool, but he certainly was a hero that day! Spent the next hour or so in a private one-on-one with Larry Miller of the Stow PD since I was the last one to talk to Jim. No grief counselors back then - just police asking a lot of questions.

Don't really know for sure. Someone told me (I don't remember who) that they saw him about 5 years after the shooting, walking down a sidewalk in Stow with a girl pushing a baby stroller. Out of curiosity, I checked a People Finder site. It shows a James Dean Purk of the correct age and having lived in Stow, Now living in Sheffield Lake, OH.

I remember Jim as a nice guy. Quiet, but not nerdish or overly quiet. He used to have his gym bag with him nearly every day because he loved playing basketball at lunch and would change into his shorts and T-shirt.

I don't recall the commotion that day - must have been in a different area of the school. I do recall the next day and the constant conversations about the shooting. We all prayed for Pete to recover! He was a bit of a subdued "Paul Lynde" type. He was a good teacher IMO. I remember being in his lab class, and my buddy Dave D. and I played a little joke on him. The experiment's instructions said "With your hand waft the fumes towards your face...". So I marched up to Mr. Grande and proceeded to tell him that we must be all out of hand wafts - we couldn't find them anywhere! Did he have any automatic wafts? No such luck. He seemed to genuinely appreciate the humor, while perhaps not knowing for sure if we were serious or pulling his leg.

I hope James Purk is doing well these days. He made a huge mistake that day, and has paid his dues to society. I hope he can sleep at night. What a nightmare for all involved! Peace to all.
