You couldn't pay me enough to do that job. No support from city council, the mayor OR the public. Not worth risking your life everyday, if you ask me.

Why would young men and women want to put their lives on the line in a city where they are disrespected - always wrong -alway judged guilty before proven innocent - I fear for our men and women in blue they have my total respect for the job they do. I believe there should always be TWO officers in a police car esp. at night and in high crime areas which seems to be most all of Akron Use our taxes to hire and train more police so all can be with a partner. God bless and protect all policemen in America.

Here's the problem with their hiring policies, most people between those ages are very immature, have had no responsibilties ever, dont care over all for people in general. How can i tell, i watch them drive down the street acting like idiots, i see them in stores screaming and yelling at their baby daddy or mama. Most between 21-31 these days have absolutely no clue. Akron will get worse not better.

Hey NIMBY... you left out Don's holier-than-thou henchman, the Minister of black-is-always-right and cops-are-always-wrong, Marco Sommerville.

Yea Right!!! The Mayor and City Council want the best recruits, but they lack the understanding that Akron is a terrible department to work for. Plusquelic and City Council should be ashamed and ambarrassed for their LACK OF SUPPORT for their local police. These men and women risk their lives everyday, only to be cut down by Administration. Screw Akron, and Screw the Akron Beacon Journal for also getting things twisted!

Akron needs more police officers but they will only hire enough to replace the ones that are retiring or that old Donny boy fires. APD is very under staffed. The police are complaining about it all of the time. No kick backs here for old Donny boy so he doesn't consider it an important issue. I still think that old Donny boy should work as a cop for a month. Maybe then he would have a little more respect for the APD.

I may very well apply and make a change. Although I currently work for the City, we need honest law-abiding employees with the backing and support of our communities and politicians.

It's all perspective. Consider the top 4 MLB teams have a combined salary of around $650,000,000.00. I would say society needs to re-evaluate it's priorities. Is LeBron James REALLY worth the money being thrown at him because he can make a jump shot 35% of the time in a losing effort again and again? Who should be paid more, James and the cavs, or the indians best slugger with a one for three average? How about the cop pulling the dude with the gun in his waistband over?, He should be making $40K a year because his LIFE is on the line EVERY day to protect YOU and they don't even know you. Start paying these men and women what the job is worth and you will see willing and dedicated applicants early and often. But, instead, we will hear more "go cavs, go indians, go browns" as we read about another cop being shot by the urchins in Akrons' streets. Who is to blame for this? we all are.

They should have no problem recruiting. Just offer an early out for most offenders down at 'the county'.

I sure don't see the difference between your average street thug and APD personnel. The thugs rob you, APD and the legal system fine you. Both constitute a 'street tax'. Both probably bullied plenty of lunch money from other kids. Now they float around in cruisers like land sharks. Nobody knows any of them by name.

Hey APD, think you got an image problem?!? Maybe you could lose some of the high handed arrogance when dealing with the folks whose taxes pay your salaries?

You want more respect from citizens, then earn it and treat us with respect.

My husband is applying again. He is still in the military. He passed the agility test and civil service but wasn't hired the last time. He had more experience in this field than anyone they hired. I don't understand it. He still wants to be a cop after all the bs lately. All we need now is new upper management for the city.

Having the desire to become a police officer or firefighter is a calling. Just like becoming a priest. I am not a religious person at all, but I do believe there is a force inside of you that has a desire to do good. It doesn't matter about the pay or problems with the city or lack of respect that some have for the job. The officers with this calling are the ones that change people's lives on a daily basis. If you go into the job for the pay or to get to bash someone's head in your going into for the wrong reasons and sooner or later it will come back to haunt you.
