All right! Let's all be on panic mode now. Because kids NEVER threaten physical harm on each other!

"lock-down" is a touchy, feel good, liberal way of saying "lock-up".

Do you 'lock down" your car at night?

Do you 'lock down' your house?

They 'locked up' the kids for their safety.

Must be a slow news day. A bit of an over reaction by Mc Kenna but he has to cover his backside. That Newsday blows it up does no good but God knows they need to sell newspapers. School days were much more mundane when I attended M.H.S.

I say give the teachers and the districts the control of all schools again..When a student is bad..he/she gets punished and no BS law suit from parents..Thats how it was when I went to school..
Kids learn nothing today and the district and teachers cant do anything to change it..
Couple years ago in Northport a guard got fired because he caught a kid on campus with pot. Parents sued because he had no search warrant..

The problem today is the kids have no release pressure valve. You don't see sit-ins or political things that was done in the 60's. In the 70's, there were school riots, like those at Lafayette High School. I am not supporting riots, but I am suggesting that you are seeing an escalating in violence, and this is all during a time of increasing government intervention in the lives of people. But where intervention is required, those programs are reduced or eliminated, such as after school volleyball, dodgeball, or basketball activities.

Oh for God's sake, when is this nonsense gonna stop with the panic that Newsay is spreading? One of these days, many people will die as a result of these false alerts and Newsday and the panic crowd will be to blame. Mark my words.

Sure kids threaten each other but these days they do more than threat. They carry it out more than they did years ago when I was in school. They have access to weapons and bring them to school. Back in the day it was a simple :My Dad is bigger than your Dad and I'll meet you by the flagpole". One punch - if it came to that - and they were friends again. Now they shoot, stab, etc.... You have to take it seriously. If your kid went to that school and something happened to them that could have been avoided because they had warning you would sue the crap out of them. I work in the schools and see what happens. I see what kids bring to school.

What false alert? The DISTRICT sent out e-mails to the parents that the school was on lock down. Newsday just reported it on-line. I don't think people are going to swarm to Mattituck in a panic if they don't have kids there.
And, the nonsense is gong to stop when kids stop shooting up schools because they get suspended or a bad grade. The schools have to protect the kids and take everything seriously.

It sounds like they are actually handling this properly. You have a troublemaker to begin with who is on suspension making threats. I say let the system stomp all over him. Either he was serious in which case he needs the attention or he was playing a joke, in which case he should pay the penalty for his action.

I tell you, it's out of hand. We need to rethink how to teach right from wrong, how to react, and how to punish. In general...............

We teach our children they are nothing more than glorified apes, yet we are shocked when they act like animals.

We place our values in things, yet expect our children to value people.

Watch the presidential debates...We disrespect one another, but expect our children to respect others.

We terminate children in the womb, but are surprised when children outside the womb terminate other children.

We've abandoned moral absolutes, yet expect our children to be absolutely moral.

What did you expect?

Wow, you must live a pretty sheltered life to think that I am the epitome of a schmuck. Read the news, like the mother who killed her kids, or the guy that crushed his girlfriend's cats. Or any other random news story from Hempstead, Uniondale, Roosevelt, Mastic, etc., and then come back and tell me I'm the biggest schmuck you've ever seen.

Are you kidding me? You want to blame the government for this? Typical liberal.

How about putting the blame where is squarely belongs? Where's that you ask? One the shoulders of the parents who raise children who have no respect for anyone or anything! In this "feel good/do what makes you happy" society, no one has to take any personal responsibility for anything. You just perpetuate this ridiculous train of thought.

By the way, dodgeball has been banned from New York State schools for a number of years. It's considered the strong picking on the weak. Silly, huh?
