I am curious about Curtis Bay. As you can tell, I am not from there but I am told that one part of Curtis Bay is noted as being very rough and bad.

I have a young man that is living with me that I retrieved from the streets and woods here in southwestern Virginia that tells me he live on the streets of Curtis Bay back when he was 13-16 yrs old.

Can anyone here tell me about the area that he is referring too?

Curtis Bay, in the 50s was a community of immigrants. When industry was prevelant and jobs were plenty the place thrived. I moved out in 1991 and still have family there. I can tell alot about the place and most of my memmories are good. Some are nad. There will never be another Curtis bay.

It was a good place at one time. I remember in the early 60's riding down Pennington ave. and the smells from the bakery were wonderful, not there anymore. You know in the 20's and 30's there were over 100 bars and whore houses between Pennington and Curtis Avs's, just those two streets, and yet there was almost no street crime. It was a neighborhood of immigrants, Poles, Chezk's and Russians, a good place until welfare screwed it up, no need to work hence no need to be part of society. My family moved there in 1907 and lived there and in Brooklyn until the 1990's. Just a crap-hole now.

I have lived in Curtis Bay and in the general area all of my life. Many neighborhoods go through changes. Curtis Bay is on the rise. Do we have some problems? Of course we do. However, there are alot of great people, and great views, alot of steep hills, many large companies around with jobs, and more coming in. There are individual houses, rowhouses, townhouses, and apartments. I have worked my entire life, own my house, and love Curtis Bay. You can concentrate on the bad things, but I prefer to look at the great things in Curtis Bay. We have a very active Community Association and Recreation Center. We have some great events throughout the year, most geared to children. My point is, if you happen to hang with the drug scene, then all you will see is bad. That goes for any neighborhood. Crime is below average in Curtis Bay compared to some other neighborhoods. Curtis Bay has a great deal of wonderful history, and our future is VERY BRIGHT!! We are looking for more homeowners!!

I just move out of the bay in September. I lived on a nice (spruce) street. I agree it has its ups and downs. It seems to be on the way up. Deffinitley nicer and less trashier than Brooklyn (trashtown).

Curtis Bay is cheap living if u are down & out. It does have youth groups and a very active churh. They need to take better control of the rat situation though. Glad to be back in A.A. county though. Breath of fresh air"

Curtis bay is a drug nest where dealers have free rein of the streets. No police enforcement, shootings and murders. Prostitution. drug addicts. Typical lower class baltimore. People accept it in the community because they think its ok. They are only fooling themselves. I guess it is acceptable for gangs to hang on the corners, drug dealers selling in broad daylight and the gun shots from down the hill. Who wants to put their family in jeopardy in a community that doesn't care.

I too grew up in Curtis Bay. My family left in 1981 to move us to VA. I remembered it as being a neighborhood with very little crime and never being scared to go outside, no matter what time of night it was. I remember hanging out at Hinkle’s store up the road playing video games. I walked to school everyday and had a paper route. I lived two doors down from Ernie’s Barber Shop in the 3900 block of Pennington Ave. Back then; Curtis Bay was mainly if not all white. Fairfield and Cherry Hill was the black sections to the best of my memory. I went back just for old time sake in 2001 and could not believe my eyes. Cars thumping music, blacks on the street corners, the large house next the church, believed to once belonged to Mr. Poe had burned down and it was still just a pile of rubbish. The neighborhood just, (and I didn't really expect it to) look the same, but I was not prepared for what I did see. I still have my memories though.
