I grew up in Cumberland as did my husband, we moved away when we got married at age 18, moved back 31 years later and have been back 3 years now and I am MISERABLE. Dirty, dingy, run down, no jobs, no shopping, no entertainment, NOTHING!!! It's definitely not the same as when I grew up in many many ways. After having lived away for so long I see even the mentality of the people here is different than other places. I am here only because of my husband who is in poor health and insisted on moving back here when he retired at age 50. If something were to happen to him I would be gone in a heartbeat and never look back.

Born and raised in Cumberland, left at 18 for greener pastures. Cumberland was different then, we were safe, secure, knew everyone or of them, creating that small town feel that died many years ago. I am happy that I was able to leave, but sad that I lost that security. For those complaining, move; for those that miss the small town atmosphere, visit! Be careful what you seek because it isn't always what you pictured. I miss Cumberland, but I could never live there again. I miss honesty, real friendships that can last a lifetime; Coney Island Dogs; Gino and Jeff and relatives there. I don't miss narrow minded inbred hill billy moonshiners.

I miss the closeness of city living. You know, like being able to walk/bike anywhere. I live in suburban Winchester and you can't do anything without a car. I also like the Canal, GAP trail, hiking up Lover's Leap, all the cool railroad stuff. BUT, Cumberland doesn't have the job and the money that I have worked to achieve soooo realistically I'm going to remain a tourist for Cumberland for a long long time...

I've been back recently. Don't recognize the place. How disappointing. From all the major industry that used to be there to - a Federal Prison. Annapolis should be embarrassed to have a state that is run by one population center, has one major tourist attraction, and is so backwards they're proud of it.
The only counties with clout, and any power, are DC or Baltimore suburbs. The state is anti-business, anti-social, and woefully behind the times on most everything. What an embarrassment; we couldn't even gain Northrop Grumman's HQ a few years ago. Losing anything to the "Commonwealth of Virginia" should be a wake up call to the politicos. Fire em all!
The state did so well in getting tobacco out - but missed the boat on the wine industry. Maryland is way late to that party. So our farmers are rotating corn and soybeans, our wine industry is making headway with no support from the state legislature. I'm disappointed in the way Cumberland has been left to fend for itself with no help at the state level. The folks in Annapolis should get in their cars and go West every now and then - look at conditions in the not-so-well-lit parts of the state. My $.02

I lived on Rte 28 near Short Gap, until I was 11or12, then moved to Cumberland. Lived there until I was 18. I joined the Air Force, and spent the next 20 years traveling the world. When I retired from the Air Force I spent the next 20 years working for DoD in Ohio. Retired from there and moved to Hawaii. Enjoying my retirement. I miss some things about Cumberland, but afraid I could not live there now. Ihad a good childhood, and spent my teenage years working at Capital Lanes bowling Alley in South Cumberland. I looked forward to swimming at Constitution pool in the summers.

Cumberland is economically depressed. If you have other money don't need to work could be a nice place to live

Of course this same pace ran out the Ku Klux Klan. I was hoping a few anarchist showed up and burned the vehicles owned by the Ku Klux Klan.
