What's that street again?

Bernice Mithoefer, 87, has lived his whole life along the road named after his great-grandfather -- though the name is misspelled on street signs and widely mispronounced.

"Mit-hayfer" is even a bit Americanized from the German pronunciation of the "oe" sound. But "mit-hayfer" is closer to right than "mit-hawfer" is.

I noticed the Mithoefer shoppes by washington square were indeed spelled didfferent than the street name...I always wondered why, now I know!

I hope the officials decide to spell it correctly when they replace the signs. It's sad that a decision could be made to keep an error just because it's what people are accustomed. That kind of ignorant thinking blocks progress.
