$23.5M school budget goes to voters in Freeport, Pownal, Durham

FREEPORTA a ' Nearly 500 Freeport , Pownal and Durham residents attended the first Regional School Unit 5 town budget meeting Tuesday night and ratified a nearly $23.5 million budget that will increase Pownal's property taxes by more than 25 percent.

The first RSU#5 budget meeting was an exercise in democracy - if you believe that democracy consists of two towns voting to pass a budget that lowers or maintains their own taxes while raising the taxes of the third town by 26%. The relative size of Freeport compared to Pownal made the outcome a foregone conclusion, but it was still painful to watch. It will be interesting to see the next steps in this process.
