You are right, Harold (and thank you for all you do for the cats). I work in dog rescue and it is much the same. The prices go up, the adoptions go down, and it gets harder to take care of the animals. We pull a lot of dogs from shelters, and they are having a hard time keeping up with the influx of animals that come in every day.
Donating time and/or money to rescues or shelters is crucial to them being able to help animals in need.

p.s. PLEASE spay or neuter your animals!! That would be the biggest help to all rescues and shelters!

It seems to me that cats would pose some real problems in adoption since most cats from birth have an "attitude". Many pets are set out or brought to a shelter because the owners didn't realize what a responsibility having a pet entailed. Other animals are set out or brought to a shelter because the animals have behavioral problems to begin with despite proper training and TLC. Some of the problems cannot be reversed. I speak from experience as out of our three canine companions, two were adopted and have special problems due to their past treatment. We also have two parrots and one of those was abused. We give them all love and care, but dealing with the aspects of their individual behavioral problems can be trying at times. In your letter to the editor and on your website, you mention the financial burdens of operating a shelter. Maybe you should consider giving up your shelter if you depend on it for financial gain. You could always be a paid employee of a more established shelter if rescue is where your heart is.

RVN, I think you have the wrong impression of Catman- he is clearly not in the rescue business for financial gain. Also, not all cats have an "attitude".

Catman and other area shelters are doing good work with ever-dwindling resources. I'm glad that you adopted rescued pets, but please don't be so critical- you're not helping.

Katie, I didn't mean to be critical and I have the greatest respect for those trying to help give animals a good and loving home. I also deeply respect those in the trenches practicing what they preach about animals. I am most familiar with ACN and they do fantastic work as I am sure Catman and others do.

yes if people would spay and neuter their animals we would not have the problem with population of homeless and unwanted animals. It is the owners responsibility to control the number of pets that they have and trying to sell or adopt out animals here in cullowhee and sylva is hard to do since most rental homes does not allow pets on the premises everywhere you look to rent it specifically says no pets so trying to have a home and a pet is almost impossible because the renters take it out on everyone else that no pets should be allowed in their rental homes due to the lack of responsibilty from previous owners and their lack of cleaning up or controlling them
