Letters to the editor for July 4, 2009

Full story: The Santa Fe New Mexican

On the first Fourth of July, Americans were officially "endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights ... Life, Liberty and the Pursuit of Happiness." The Founding Fathers knew our rights were gifted by a higher authority, not by men who could take them away.

Please explain why the rights of those who drink and drive, who voluntarily risk people's lives, are more important than the rights of innocent victims.
W.B. Morton

I'm convinced the reason is because between repeated traffic and court fines, subsidized and required drunken driving programs and defense attorney fees, DUI charges and resultant expenses are considered big business money-makers. Believe me, if the state wasn't making money on it somehow/some way, it wouldn't be going on at all. It all boils down to the money box and whoever is involved in the associated lobbying process.

Daily Horoscope for November 14

Leo

There is plenty to do today in your own community and you'll find you're out and about more than usual now. There may be some misunderstandings at home, so don't be surprised if you have to make several trips before you have everything right. Don't allow emotional upsets to affect you too much - if you've had a fight, wait at least thirty minutes before getting behind the wheel of a car.
