One time I stayed with a friend that lived in a neighborhood that had a lot of Spanish speaking families. I moved in shortly before Christmas and noticed they decorated their homes with a lot of lights and had parties with a lot of Christmas carols. It was really cheerful. I knew how to say Feliz Navidad from the song and only a little Spanish from when I took it in school. I learned that if I tried to speak as much Spanish as I could wit them and filled in with English, they could usually understand me and we could communicate somewhat. "Spanglish" is when you talk part in Spanish and part in English. They were friendly and seemed to enjoy my attempts to assimilate into their neighborhood. "Como say (point at whatever) en Espanyol" means "How do you say (whatever you pointed at)". I tried to fit in where I moved to and if Jose tried to do that and immigrate the right way -legally, for the right reasons that would be cool. We could sit around and drink a cervesa and hang out.

What disgusts me about the Mexicans being here is not so much the Mexicans, but the fact that our own country goes all out to help foreigners to have a better life when our own people desperately need what we are GIVING to them. You can't blame the Mexicans for wanting and taking advantage of all the benefits our government is so freely offering. I hope that one day our government wises up and starts taking care of our own before there is nothing left of the homeland we once knew and loved. I doubt it happens in my lifetime, but maybe for my children.
