Are you saying, jogger, that some one who jogs, like you, deserves to be attacked?

it's remarkable this has happened (or been reported?) much before, considering that we have crazy bums living in the woods all around town. Yes, I mean crazy. bums. Then again, perhaps they are just fugitives.

You paid for your permit, now take a Kel-Tec P32 on your jog.

This is why I won't use the trails. Although beautiful they are NOT safe. Too many homeless ruining it for everyone who pays taxes for the trail system to exist.

It appears that over the years Charlottesville has said come one come all!! And come they did!! Now in many areas it is truly unsafe-a far cry from what it used to be!! How very very sad!! Particularly-anywhere close to downtown. The price we all pay for welcoming those who just hang out and contribute nothing and take everything! They have nothing to do. It will only get worse unless we DEMAND changes be made! It appears the minority is ruling and the majority is unAmerican if we complain! I, for one, am sick of it!!!!

I'm not a fan of an overreaching police force, but overlooking camps of bums/criminals/mentalhealthiss ues living wild in the shelter of patches of urban woods is wrong. These people are obviously in deficit of life's necessities and some will find & take them via assault, robbery, burglary.

Its a different time. Don't go jogging on trails by yourself and near dark.. Its common sense. Just because you have the right to doesn't mean that it is safe. Be smart before next time it ends worst than being knocked unconscious

I'm 6' 260 lb and when I take my young son on that trail, I'm carryin. This is a perfect example of why you should be armed. 911 = dial a prayer..357 = dial a solution. All criminals will think twice when they know YOU WONT.

Kel Tec .32 beats a stick but personally I don't want to poke leak holes in them; I wanna instantly dispatch em to the other side. That's .357. I'm telling you, if you don't put em down they will come back and rob you with a lawyer.

I'd like to see the local media cover the real story here with aerial shots of the bum encampments down by Freebridge, north of Wal-Mart, Moore's Creek (any still behind K-Mart?). That would be interesting news and scary too. Maybe there are lots of people that don't know or believe what is going on. With the leaves off the trees, there should be some visibility right now. My case (my familY was attacked downtown) never made the news, so I'm willing to bet this is the tip of the iceberg (with the potential for a lot more pain).

Dozens of people have been assaulted and/or robbed on this trail in recent years and most of these crimes haven't been reported by the media since they don't contribute to the illusion that Charlottesville is the perfect place to be. Even the usually oblivious UVA females now tend to jog with a group when they "do the trail". This area is a well known hangout for the folks that have impressive resumes' in the local court websites so if you feel empowered enough to jog alone keep Clint's words in mind---"Well punk, how lucky do you feel"?

This guy sounds like the loiterer that I saw at the Rivanna Ridge shopping center a short time ago. I reported him to the police. The weather isn't even warm yet and a new tide of oxygen bandits are already arriving in the promised land known as Charlottesville. The wife of a guy in my office made 5,000 dollars off a picture of a wanderer she took near the Rivanna River a few years ago. Paid for her new Nikon set up. An amateur shutter bug, she showed her pictures at a party and a federal guy saw one and asked her where she took it. One thing led to another and she ended up getting 5K for a guy that was wanted on a federal fugitive warrant. So sometimes there is "gold in them thar bums".

Media Release: A short time after the incident, police engaged the suspect (riding in the shopping cart) in a high speed pursuit. The suspect sped away after spike strips failed to deflate the solid caster wheels. Suspect is still at large.
