Prayers go out to the deceased family members. I can't imagine the pain and hurt that they are going through. I hope they get answers as to what has happened.

Did the police ever catch people responsible for the home invasion that took place in the same general area a few weeks ago? http://www.nbc29.com/story/19242581/police-se...

How is the fact that the police pulled resources from the prez's visit relevant to the story?!

They will close our schools for the presidents visit but they do not close an elementary school across the street from a murder scene still under investigation??

"Police also say they have had to pull resources allocated for the President's Visit to Charlottesville to investigate." What a pity. Is the rest of the area is subject to lawlessness while the downtown mall and all roads leading to it are lined with local police, FBI, Secret Service and any other deputies they can get to work it? Come on, folks -- let's show some respect for the citizens and not act like they are causing an imposition for the officers paid to protect and serve THEM. NBC29, you could have worded this so much better. Maybe try: "While local police had been assigned to secure the downtown mall and surrounding areas, the sheriff will commit resources to this investigation."

Agreed, about resources being pulled. Our community comes first. Let him find and pay for his own dam_n security. The point is 4 people are dead and possibly 3 of the children. I don't understand how they can close school for a half day for the obama, but keep it open for the tragedy that just occurred. My son saw this on the news this morning, and immediately thought it was one of friends their friends in their class. And now... They have to ride by on the school bus and see this. Didn't the school system stop to think the impact is will have the kids, especially since it is located right across from Stony Point School. My heart and prayers go out to everyone involved, especially if it involved 3 children. It just makes me sick to my stomach. SHAME ON THE ACPS FOR KEEPING STONY POINT OPEN TODAY!!!

Sorry for all the typos and extra words in my post that should have been removed. I'm just furious over what has happened and the school remaining open today, and the audacity of them mentioning they had to pull resources from odama(and that's NOT a typo).

with such short notice where do you think the parents would have for their children to be today if school was closed. If so happens that your child knows these kids then you had the option of keeping your child at home. You need to respect YOUR PRESIDENT.

And let kids live their life in that happy little bubble that you make for them? Where everything smells like flowers and you get a warm hug every 10 min after you finish singing songs together? It's the real world. Do you think a school bus should turn around and drop kids off every time it gets ready to pass an accident/fire/traffic stop? I'm pretty sure they are not letting students walk thru the scene, so they get to see what? Police cars and officers walking around. Are you going to petition that the house be razed after the investigation is complete? So the kids don't have to see the house? Lets be realistic about it. The gunman is dead. Threat neutralized. Game over. The situation is horrible, but there is certainly no point in closing school.

Just because the school was open didn't mean you had to send YOUR child. If you, personally, felt the situation was unsafe or unsettling for YOUR child, don't send them to school. It's called parental/ personal responsibility.

From what I have read....there were no children murdered (two male and two female adults). Why not keep school open? The house involved (I saw picture of it on news and I live in that area) is not "across from the school" (down the road a ways). The reason I feel it might be murder/suicide,#1 is that's was just announced in the Daily Progress,#2 I don't believe they would keep the school open if they felt there was a shooter-at-large. While I agree on the "pulling of resources"....you know much these police officers make to come in on their days off? To work double shifts? They clammor (sp?) for opportunities to work extra.

To all of those crying about not closing the school...that building is one of the ACPS facilities that is closing early for Pres O's visit. IF the shooting involved family members associated with the school, then it will be important for the counselors to work with the student population ASAP. Keeping it open was the right choice. PD knew it was a murder suicide as soon as they arrived...no threat to the surrounding population.

How tiresome that the police will have to "pull resources" from Obama's campaign visit (which is no doubt already excessively protected by other agencies) in order to do the real police work they were hired for! What a shame that these officers will miss Obama's motorcade while pretending to protect it!

There are some serious whack-jobs posting on this article. Let's leave Obama out of this. Whoever wrote the story should have never alluded to that topic at all, the two are totally unrelated. Can we have any conversation at all, even one about 4 of our neighbors dead in a tragedy, without bringing politics into it? You disgrace their memories. Pray for their souls and peace for their families, and espouse your whacko political views at an appropraite time and place. This isn't it.

Because of past incidents like this around the country and the police said there is no danger to the community which means there isn't some shooter on the loose. Also the cops have been showing up at that house on a somewhat regular basis.

Those living in the immediate area have been questioned by police and given this very small amount of information. They are still investigating, but think about it, if they thought the killer was on the lose, wouldn't they close the elementary school 20 yards away from the bodies?
