A Pine Plains, N.Y., town official says a gunman has taken a high school principal hostage, the Associated Press reports.

Won't work. The fact is that most of the people who take people hostage are not 'in their right minds' at the time. That is the main reason that 'executing' people keeps NO ONE from killing someone else..... 99.99999999999999% of the time, the person in question is not thinking clearly, so 'execution if I kill someone'(retarded person's voice here) doesn't come into their mind.

We would be better to start teaching people from BIRTH that there is no reason to physically harm someone else, save if they try to do that to you or someone else and it is your last choice to stop that attack..... unfortunately, with the conservacreeps who think that they have the right to kill someone if they 'disagree' with the way that they live their lives in this country, we will NEVER have everyone living by that rule.
