I am writing this to see if anyone else has had any problems with 9lives can cat food. I bought a 12 pack yesterday of this brand of cat food and fed a half of a can to my 6 month old kitten and now my cat is dead. Within an hour and a half of me feeding it to her she became sick, listless, could not walk and crying as if she were in pain. Within 4 hours of eating it she was dead. It was late at night and no where I could take her to try and save her. I am absolutely heart broken over this, I loved her very much.

I of course can not say for sure that is what caused her death but I feel like maybe it did as she was healthy prior to eating this food. I looked online after she passed away to see if their were any recalls for this product. I found a consumer reports site filled with numerous complaints about this product making animals sick with the same symptoms my cat had.

Like I said their is no way of knowing if this is what caused her death. Just in case their is some truth to the many complaints and a possible contamination please be careful and watch for symptoms if you feed your pet this product. I know that many will probably make fun of this post but I ask you please don't. I know many people love their pets (cats/dogs) and would be heart broken just as I am to loose them in such a terrible way. It was a horrible painful death for my kitty and so sad to watch.

I lost one of my cats when their was a problem with the Walmart Brand cat food. You think you are feeding them something good and then it kills them.

Sorry to hear of your loss

Gee...that is sad and I am sorry that happened to you.

My cat?...dang...he's eaten so many things that I didn't feed him without dying that frankly I'm shocked a cat could succumb so quickly and easily to some bad canned food.

They usually throw up unless they've been actually poisoned!

I've always fed mine "Fancy Feast"...but I also cut up chicken that I've cooked for myself and I've fed him Tuna from the can before too.

Here in Florida we have poison toads & frogs...snakes too...all of which my cat has learned not to chew on the hard way, and he's still alive!

My cat is an indoor/outdoor cat...he goes all over..fights with other animals...sometimes comes home bleeding...and still HE LIVES!!!...going on 6 years now.

However a baby cat IS a baby...and you have to be careful not to leave any household chemicals around that it could get into.

Thank you, and I am so sorry to hear of your loss also. Yes I thought I was feeding her something good for her, a better brand of food that would be nutritious. I just don't know of anything else that could have made her sick and killed her. I keep all cleaning supplies put away in a cabinet so she could not have come in contact with a poisonous chemical.

Thank you, I appreciate your kindness. I was feeding her boiled hamburger or boiled chicken with rice alternated with deli cat dry cat food. I thought I would try the 9lives canned food to give her more variety and it would be nutritious for her.She gobbled it down and I thought everything was okay at first. I have fed my cats 9lives before and never had a problem. I just can't believe this happened and I don't know what else could have caused it.

I keep all cleaning supplies put away in a closet so she could not have come in contact with a poisonous chemical. She acted as if she were poisoned though, or at least in my opinion. She didn't vomit until right before she died and I mean she vomited violently and had a seizure and died. It was horrible to watch and have no way to help her other than hold her.

Your cat sounds like a great kitty and very adventurous. I am glad that he is okay and it sounds like you really love him. I will try the fancy feast the next time I buy cat food for my other cats. I will not be giving them 9lives again. I still have the other cans of food in the box and intend to take them back to the store to at least make them aware. I will not feed them to my other cats.

Thank you for your kindness. My other cats have eaten 9lives many times before with never a problem till now. I hate to think it is the cat food I bought for her but I honestly don't know what else it could have been. I have searched through my house to see if their is anything else she could have possibly come in contact with and I have found nothing. I hope your cats continue to be healthy with no problems. I am an animal lover, especially cats and I hate to see anything bad happen to any animal.

Not saying this is what happened, but maybe your baby had a twisted intestine? What exactly were the symptoms?

Oh my gosh! I'm so very sorry for your loss. I have never used 9 lives but my mom does for her cat, and she never had a problem, other than him getting bored with it, lol.

I cannot imagine how painful it was for. A cat owner myself 2 adults and a 5mo old kitten, I hope you find answers for your peace of mind. Bless you sweetie, and know that your little angel is watching over you .

As a few others have said, I think there was probably something else that caused it. I've used 9 Lives before and never had any trouble with it at all. I think it was very thoughtful of you though, to try to give people a head's up incase that was the cause and to spare them the heartbreak you're feeling now.

I would be devastated if something were to happen to one of my little furry friends, especially so sudden and worst, right before Christmas.:(

I'm sorry you had to go through that.:(

As I was reading it I was thinking of something internal also, but you would need a necropsy to be sure and they're not cheap.

I don't feed mine any big name brand. His canned food is "Solid Gold"--made in the US. I do give him dry IAMS natural, but that's it.

Years ago when I first got married my wife had a cat named Boobie....yeah..Boobie!

That was a great cat...
He was scared of me at first when my wife and I first started dating, but eventually that cat chose me as the favorite in the house.

He was orange and white and looked a lot like the cat I have now.

Boobie died the night the Chicago Bears won the Super Bowl.
He had a stroke or something...
It was horrible to witness what he went through, but at least he was old.

That darn cat...I still remember some of the things he did like it was yesterday.

In a way its like he never died.

It is possible and I am not ruling that out. It was just so sudden after having eaten the cat food, within 4 hours. The only problem she had before that was some diarrhea which had pretty much gone away and I had attributed maybe to the change in dry cat food or the boiled hamburger and rice. She didn't eat much of the rice but of course she gobbled up the hamburger. The symptoms after eating the cat food were at first she became withdrawn, then very tired, I found her in the floor struggling to breath, she couldn't walk at all and would fall over if she attempted to, she cried continuously and I mean she wailed. Right before she died she vomited violently, pooped herself, had a seizure and then died. It was horrible to watch.

Thank you for your kindness, I miss her so much she was such a sweet kitty. She was a calico and very tiny because she was the runt of the litter, she was my favorite. It makes me feel so bad thinking that I fed her something that may have killed her. It literally broke my heart and it still does. I know it may sound stupid but I grieve for her because I loved her very much. She was a part of my life every day and so sweet and loving. I know she is a little angel now and watching over me like you said. Being a cat owner yourself I'm sure you understand how much they become a part of your life and the love they give. I hope your kitties stay healthy, happy and live many years. God Bless.

Thank you, I'm not ruling out at all that it wasn't something else that caused it and yes I am only trying to give a heads up so I'm grateful you understand. I have used 9lives many times before and never ever had a problem and chose it because of my trust for that brand and the nutrition value. I'm afraid to give the other cans to my cats though in case that is what caused it.

I did look online after she died and found a consumer reports site that had many complaints about 9lives can cat food. My cat had exactly the same symptoms the cats in the complaints had. I know sometimes cat food can become contaminated. She literally acted like she was poisoned or something and she could not have come in contact with anything else to poison her.

It was heart breaking to watch and to loose her. I bought her stuff for Christmas and took pictures of her in her little Santa hat and necklace, she looked so cute and I'm so glad I took the pics. I can give the things to my other cats but I miss her very much and it hurt to loose her. I hope your kitties stay healthy and happy and they are with you for many years to come.

Thank you, I'm not ruling out that it was something internal because it sure could have been. I am just trying to give a heads up just in case, not trying to start any trouble. As I said I did find a site with many complaints about the 9lives can food specifically. I have fed 9lives to my cats before and had no problems. I'm just worried that maybe a contamination happened with this specific lot of food. I had been feeding her boiled hamburger or chicken and rice and dry cat food. I just thought that the 9lives would be good for nutrition and possibly she would eat it more readily. I have already buried her so I will never know for sure and I wish I could to ease my mind. I hope your kitty will be healthy and with you for many years to come I know you must love him very much.

That is a cute and very original name for a cat. Isn't it funny how animals choose one person as a favorite and nothing can change it. He sounds like a wonderful cat you must have loved him very much. I have a orange and white cat also named miss puss, yeah I know it's kind of a strange name too. You should hear it come over the loud speaker at Kroger pharmacy when I get her medicines and they combine it with my last name. It really is funny and embarrassing too..lol

I'm sorry to hear how your kitty died and it must have been terrible to watch like you said. I'm glad you had many years with him and so many memories. Yes, it can be like they never died at all when you remember the loving and the crazy things they did. I will always remember my little Callie (that was her name) she was very sweet and loving. I miss her very much.

Ahh...cat names.
Again I'm sorry about "Callie."

When it comes to cat names I try to name them after some trait of theirs.
For instance...my cat Teater....I found him as an 8 week old stray that came up out of the ditch of the road I was walking along.

I tell people he's very rare and special breed of cat, and they'll ask me what he is?
I tell them he's a "Tennessee Ditch Cat."
Yep...you can't buy one of those at the pet store.

Anyway...he got his name because when I first picked him up he began sucking on my arm up by my elbow like he was trying to nurse.
He was so small I understood him doing that, but he's been with me 6 years now and HE STILL DOES IT!
Thus the name..."Teater."

After "Boobie" died my wife and I had two more cats that she got from a guy at work whose cat had kittens.
I didn't know she was bringing them home, but as I sat in the livingroom watching TV as she was coming in the door, these two little kittens came creeping around the corner.

I guess she called herself trying to surprise me, but when I saw them I said..."who brought this riff raff into the house?"

The names stuck..."Riffie" the male...and "Rafter" the girl.
They lived 15-16 years...with of the course Riffie dying first and then Rafter about 6 months later.

Its sad to see life long partners like that lose their other half...and like people, the other one usually goes not too long after losing its mate.

I've had two good friends lose pets in the last year.
Its hard...but really all you can do is get another one and love it.

The shelters are full of them...do yourself and a lonely cat a favor and go get one.

Its the only advice I have for feeling better...if that helps?
I hope so.
