yes things are certainly improving, due to the backlash of the the last two or so years the numbers of people on food stamps, and unemployment are rising, and so is the amount of people who are finally being foreclosed on. i think everyone needs to watch the news, and then understand what it takes to survive when the dollar is worth less and less everyday. It doesnt take an idiot to understand that people have to do what they do, just like the years of the depression when people had to stand in bread lines due to job and money loss. its no different. would you rather see twenty mexicans who live under one roof each get food stamps and paid in cash,or one guy who has a crapload of bills and cant afford to even bring a dinner to work. cmon people get your priotities together. leave the food stamp people alone, they are the least of our worries.

While the mainstream media has all but convinced most Americans that the nation is slowly climbing out of the "recession," new statistics released by the US Department of Agriculture (USDA) suggest otherwise. According to just-released participation numbers for the agency's Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP), known more commonly as "food stamps," nearly one in six Americans now participates in the program, which represents a new record high.

I remember the stories about people during the depression from my gramma. Some had to lie, cheat and steal to even eat. get over it. what would you do? The price of a bottle of cooking oil is almost 3.00, the price of milk is almost 4.00. tell me what a dollar buys now. even UGO is sometimes more than Krogers get a life. i say if people can get them, they can get them. the govt gives more away to foreign countries everyday. dont do anything to help us. try and go to Good Samaritans for food one day and see what you get. You don't have any idea till you have been there.

have fun when the economy gets worse then post on topix you are one of many homeless people the govt wont help. it will happen.

I would rather not see any Mexicans, especially not any getting government aid. Maybe I could agree with a food stamp program that was governed better, just two months ago Overton County police arrested a man for selling his food stamps online. And most the junkies sell their stamps to their dealers at 50% of the value.

the funny part about it is, if people were not nosey, they would not know who had them and who didnt. so put that in your food stamp account and go buy some groceries.

It is hard not to notice when they hold up the line and argue about what they have left on their balance to the cashier. All the while their hoodlum children run around pulling stuff off the racks. Or when some Mexican knocks on my door that use to live in the same rental property wondering where his government check is that I already marked return to sender.

use the imagination: now if they get money for the card, they could give the card, and pin number to the person who gave them the money and then they get it back when it is used up. now does that make senses. same principal as exchanging an item for cash. duh!!!!!!!!

You should never assume that because a person receives food stamps that the person is a lazy bum who is cheating the system or who refuses to work. Yes, there are people like that. If you know for certain and have some kind of evidence that someone is abusing the system, then GET OFF TOPIX AND TURN THEM IN!!! We need to clean out the people who abuse the system so that people who genuinely need assistance can get it. There are several elderly or severely disabled people who cannot work and need the assistance. There are also families who were able to provide for their children until the recession hit. Don't sit there and judge and think that they keep having babies they cannot support; you do not know their history. And there are also people who are trying to better themselves, like the one who posted earlier saying she (or he, not sure) is trying to finish college so she can provide for her child. Don't look down on here; give her a hand and lift her up. Most people don't look at foodstamps as a lifetime career; some need it to finish out their lives and some need it just until they get on their feet. Unfortunately, there are some that abuse the system and I agree - that is wrong. But you must do your part and report them!

Abuse of food stamps is just like the fat nasty people who moved here to live off tenncare years ago. they have abused this system so much now they are living off disabiity. pretty soon that wont exist anymore. instead of getting a job they pretend to be sick so they can sit and play with their pokeman videos they should have grown out of after age eighteen. i dont see how a mother can agree with this behavior. go get a job you fat retard. these people are the ones who have made it bad for the people who really need assistance. it makes me sick. because of one 600 lb retard, 2000 old people can no longer afford medicine. hope you guys are happy now. the whole world is full of users.

First of all I think you should think a little bit before using the word retard. The system is the way it is and it doesn't matter how they set it up. You cannot actually believe that people won't figure out a way to cheat it. There are people who benefit from this program, people that are able to go on and succeed. Its worth all the mess to help those who need it and don't lie.

I use to work at Wal-Mart years ago before they had the ebt cards and you would see people come in and use their foodstamps and then pay cash for their cigarettes and tobacco and I would watch them leave and they would be driving a Cadilic or some other type of new car or truck. Now you tell me wants wrong with the system. It looks like to me if they would quit buying cigarettes and tobacco and sell their new car and buy something that they could pay cash for to get them to and from that they could afford to pay for their groceries.

They need to go back to the way food stamps use to be a long time ago.Food Stamps wernt free. You actually had to pay for them.If you were approved for 200 dollars you had to pay 35 dollars. It would help the debt problem some and it would get the free loaders off the system.

There was some fat woman in front of me in line at the exxon by I-40 the other day, she bought some doritos, 2 liter of coke, and some other junk food with EBT card and then purchased cigarettes with cash. The state quit making money off inmates smoking in prison but they will pay people to smoke out here it seems like. From a business stand point it would make sense to let the inmate kill his self smoking so you don't have to support him anymore.

i dont believe it, i know for a fact, the whole family moved here to get free insurance years ago, when tenncare first started. so get real. the ones who need it cant get it, but people like this can get anything, simply because they know how to make themselves and members of their family sick.

If you can't get qualified without lying you don't need it. Its not like there is a limit as to how many people can qualify for FS. If you meet the qualification then you get it. Tenncare is a totally different program. And if you "know" people who cheat it report them. Everyone seems to think that one dead beat takes the place of someone who needs it and that's just not true. If you are eligible then you get it period you don't "take someones place". Granted some people cheat it but there will always be someone to cheat the systems no atter what they are.
