actually Sylvester lost the majority of their lawsuits but to be a good neighbor Massey still covered their reserves.
Have you ever noticed the lifestyle around the mines? usually it's not people who work in the mines...it's fat, lazy people who sit on their butts and smoke all day...I'm not saying it's an ideal environment but I don't think it's more dangerous than living with exhaust in big cities or by the aluminum plan or chemical plants and without these places what would anyone do for employment? draw a check?! that would be a great solution. and I'm not even going to go into the importance of electricity which coal is necessary for at this point...I think the horrible storms and weeks with out power took care of that point.
WRONG! The residents of Sylvester WON and Massey had to pay them a lil over $470,000. Plus put up that dome wich they fought kicking and screaming the whole way. Massey was NEVER a good neighbor to ANYONE. Seriously do you people read ANYTHING before coming on here and making yourselves look like fools? Or am I apparently the only one who knows what the hell they're talking about? Oh yea BTW coal ISN'T necessary for power anymore. I could go into detail about solar, wind, dam and nuclear energy but y'all morons don't listen to me anyway.

probably because your an idiot. as an AFFORDABLE energy source coal is absolutely needed right now. there may be alternatives but they aren't available for mass production of energy and certainly, at this point, would not be affordable. as for natural gas putting coal out of business that is just laughable. it's way more expensive and who builds a new house with gas anything these days...the people who have gas wells on their property and use it for free...coal has forever been and will remain for a long, long time the main source of income in this state. if you don't receive income directly from it you do indirectly...impossible to live in WV and not so if you don't like it I'm sure California would welcome you and your windmill!!!

Yeah let's fill our water supplies with methane because that's so much healthier than mining coal! Natural gas burns cleaner but it's MUCH more polluting and destructive to get to. And nuclear... Don't even start there. Go ask Japan how much they love their nuclear power plants. I bet your backyard would be a great place to leave the waste that will be around for thousands of years.

Bullshit. That why all the power plants are either switching to natural gas or shutting down completely. That's why Alpha layed off 100's of miners in last few months, cus coal is so affordable and in such demand right now. You call me an idiot but the more you talk the more you make it evident who the real idiot is.

You post on a forum dedicated to the UBB disaster about how bad coal is and you expect people not to defend themselves. You're the biggest fool I've seen on this post so far. Have a little respect and start a different thread if want to bash coal, coal miners, and their families. Leave the memory of the men who died, just doing their job, alone!

May God bless the men who have gone and may he help heal the families of the ones who lost the people they love.

Actually some Power Plants have paid the millions it cost to put in scrubbers, because they want to burn coal! If your not for coal, then I guess you enjoyed the several days without power we had!

Why did no one lower the flag at the UBB memorial in rememberance of the fallen troopers? Also, the veteran's memorial flag was not lowered. Someone should be in charge of this. If you can't fly the flag correctly, it should not be flown. Governor Manchin ordered the flags lowered till after the funerals. I think this is the least the UBB monument committee should do. Our state troopers spent countless hours at UBB during the disaster. Chaplain Mitchell, a state trooper, even presided over the memorial service and the dedication service. Our troopers stood in formation and saluted the emergency vehicles as they came off the hill with the deceased miners. Thank you Cpl Bailey and Trooper Workman for making the ultimate sacrifice.May you receive your reward in heaven.

These are PEOPLE you are talking about, one of which was my dad. No,they were not the only miners to die in this state, I feel for everyone who has gone through this. No one has any idea what this was like and is still like for all the families involved. It breaks my heart to hear things people say. If this was someone in your family, you wouldn't dare say these things, and it would tear you up when people say them. Have a heart, it's the media who talks about it all the time, not these men who lost their lives, so please do not disrespect them.

Dollface, get over it. You have more money now than God so enjoy it, go buy yourself another toy and be happy. You say it's the media, you're wrong it is the families still trying to cash in on an unfortunate accident that was probably caused by God or maybe one of the miners were smoking inside at the time. You don't know.

You guys sued, you got money from insurances (plural) many donations and now you greedy SOB"S want more.

How many friggen 4 wheelers and 4x4 trucks can you drive? Dollface!

Ok this just pisses me off. This verifies that you UBB families think you're the only ones this has happened to. Did you ever stop to consider that you ARE talking to people who have lost loved ones in the mines and we're sick of you UBB families going around demanding more money expecting the whole goddamn world to feel sorry for you?

I also said I feel for everyone who has went through this, meaning everyone who has lost loved ones. Sorry if you read that wrong, I was not trying to disrespect anyone. I only wrote on here b/c it hurts me to see my dad disrespected, he was a great man. I didn't write on here to get bashed.

I'm not worried about how much money the widows got, I'm still waiting for Don and his Board to be brought to account for their actions. I don't take 29 lives lost because of greed and negligence so lightly.
