Another Soldier Refuses Afghanistan Deployment

Sgt. Travis Bishop. Sgt. Travis Bishop, who served 14 months in Baghdad with the 3rd Signal Brigade, faces a court-martial this Friday for refusing to deploy to Afghanistan. Bishop is the second soldier from Fort Hood in as may weeks to be tried by the military for his stand against an occupation he believes is "illegal." He insists that it would be unethical for him to deploy to support an occupation he opposes on both moral and legal grounds and he has filed for conscientious objector (CO) status.

If you join the military guess what?! You have to go if they say so. Now I think that Obama should reinstste the draft so these heros dont have to serve 3 and 4 tours.

All we are doing is damaging fine young men and women. We have to take them back into society. Come Mr. President. End the war or start the draft to eliveate the pressure

Soldiers have an obligation to disobey illegal orders. The invasion and occupation of Iraq and Afghanistan were wars of aggression, which according to the Nuremberg justices is the highest war crime. There is no legal basis for the current military deployments.

Our leaders should not have free reign to exploit our military personnel in furthering their criminal agenda. In fact, because the impact of these crimes is so great, resulting in so much death, injury, destruction and chaos, criminal leaders should be facing the harshest punishment stipulated by law as a deterrent against future abuses.

Simple solution.
Hold his court martial...at Bagram Airbase.
That would send a much stronger message than 30 days at Bell County jail and a discharge.

The U.S. needs to get out of Iraq and Afghanistan and a bunch more countries.
If I was in the Military today they might have to court martial me also.
Soldiers are doing 3 or 4 tours of duty in the WAR ZONE. In the old days you only went one time. Bush changed this policy and Obama is scared to change it.

In the old days? My dad did two tours in 'Nam. What in the Hell are you talking about? I guess Bush changed that for them too huh?

If I was in the army or Marines and they tried to send me to the War Zone for a second tour then I would refuse to go also.
These politicians are playing with your life.
america can never win a War in Iraq or Afghanistan. Its insane for us to be there.

What would your response have been to 9/11? Perhaps you would have just waved a white flag to save some money? Do you usually check your wallet before you decide what is right and wrong?

rattlecattle you are no american. You support the troops that are fighting where there CINC has sent them no matter what. I received a phone call this morning from my brave son who is in Afghanistan on the front line this morning (evening there) and they do not feel like fools in any way.

Most soldiers in Vietnam era only had to do one tour. And in the Korean and WW2 you only had to go one time.

Te main thing that Bush changed was having National Guard and Arrmy Reserve serving in War Zones. This rarely happened until the Bush era.

We need a draft so that everyone will have to go to War instead of killing off all the enlisted Military. I feel sorry for the poor soldiers and Marines who keep geting sent back until they get wounded or killed.

Soldiers are fools if they think they are fighting for our freedom in America.
Tey are in Iraq and Afganistan cause American corporations need access to oil and gas.

I am former Navy and I joined te Military cause I wanted to see the World and I didn't want to work in a textile mill like most of my schoolmates did after highschool. And I wanted to learn a trade.
Most people don't go in the Military cause they want to be sent off to fight a War.

If your son gets hurt in Afghanistan he will get discharged from the Military and he will have to fight with the Government to get any but the minimum benifits. The Vetrans Administration makes people wait years before they approve you for disability. All he will get is free health care at the VA. whopee......

President Bush? It was Obama that started Afghanistan, Bush had it as an afterthought, because he realized how nasty that terrain is to fight in. Obama has grown the force from 11,000 supporting Kabul to over 60,000 spread all over the place.
Shouldn't it be Obama going to prison?
For the record though, I think we should pull out of Iraq and Afghanistan immediately. It's time for the Middle East to crush itself, and it will as soon as we're gone. Muslims killing each other isn't a bad thing, and the oil will still be there when they are gone. What we don't need to do is bring their madness here. It's not a "right" of the world to be an American. Even if you're born here...as you may have already proven.

I suppose it never occurred to that Conscientous Objecter that he may be deployed during wartime. Certainly who could imagine that he might have to actually go to war.

Court Martial him for sheer stupidity would be a good start. IMO.

Last I checked, our Military is not Burger King and no, he cannot have it his way. If a person is told, ie, to jump into the water and get wet... one can file grievances, whine, whatever but still at the end of the day, the person is going to get wet. It's not damn rocket science.
