Anyone hear what they are trying to do on 394? I read they will be upgrading the portion from Sauk Trail, all the way to where it meets with IL-1, to interstate standards. Meaning ranps and overpasses instead of the regualr traffic lights that are there now. Does anyone else know anything about this? This seems like it would be a pain, and traffic would just flood the area.

Here are the exit lists...

Exit 1 Glenwood Dyer Road ( Already in place )Glenwood-Lynwood
Exit 2 Joe Orr Rd ( Interchange maybe built if Joe Orr Rd is extended into Indiana )Chicago Heights-Lynwood
Exit 3 US 30 Lincoln Hwy ( Already in place )Ford/Chicago Heights-Lynwood
Exit 4 Sauk Trail ( New interchange )South Chicago Hts.-Sauk Village
Exit 5 Steger Rd ( New interchange )Steger-Dyer,IN
Exit 6 Exchange St ( New interchange)Crete-St.John,IN
Exit 7 IL 1 Dixie Hwy ( New interchange/ last exit for I-394 )Crete-Beecher
Exit 8 Illiana Expressway ( New interchange ) To I-57 and I-65

If this does happen, i'm still torn, on whether this is a good idea, or not.

Traffic already flood the area. It would ease congestion somewhat and would make traffic flow better.

Joe Orr already goes into Lynwood. I highly doubt that it would be extended as they would have to spend way to much money to buy up all of the private land\business. If they did extend it it would basically run into Glenwood-Dyer Rd. Don't expect to see that happen.

It can only get better. Its suicide trying to exit 394 onto roads such as Bemes Rd when some dimrod diesel dummy in a 53 foot garbage hauler is right up your ass.

All the projects that you mention are from a plan that they floated about 12 years ago. It isn't funded, and isn't anywhere on a priority list. As a matter of fact, CMAP has a regional plan out there for public comment and word is that when the final plan comes out this fall, this project will be totally removed from any mention. I know that the village of Crete does not support making 394 a "limited access" highway (at least the mayor said so at a recent meeting). Ungraded intersections, hell yes they support, but not taking the intersections away and making it a highway with just a couple of exits.

Ooops, typo above. I meant that they support "UPGRADED intersections".

Hey Rich! That was me! Nope, not a politician, just a citizen who gets on every volunteer county, township, village board that I can! So infinitely more informed than you probably are I would say. The "under utilized" is based on traffic counts. Just yesterday, Saturday afternoon, beautiful day 1:00, I pulled up on 394 from Cottage Grove. I looked to the north, there was not a single vehicle in either the northbound or southbound lanes to the north. Not ONE. I looked to the south, not a single car in sight going southbound. I saw 3 passenger vehicles going north. I stopped at the light on Richton Rd. By then there were 4 cars stopped at the light going north, 3 cars at the light going south. 1 car crossing at Richton Rd. Come on... there's more cars at the intersection of Route 30 & Sauk Trail at 11:00 at night! Seriously? People think that US 30 isn't "over utilized" (not a technical term as far as I know). Except for the Indiana migration for an hour in the morning, and reverse migration in the evening, 394 could take alot more traffic.

Good lower our taxes the since your so smart and want to toot your horn. Not kiddding about the taxes see why they are so high
unless you give me the same run around i get form the accessors office.

anyway going north lets say of steger road . I am not referring to parts say south of exchange.
Coming form the North towards Steger go and look at the traffic there and get back with me on taxes and the low under utilized road.

This project would be great if the Ilianna is built.

I'm THRILLED that the County is finally upgrading the interchange at Exchange, aren't you? People going west on Exchange (that is, all the Indiana people working in Illinois) to I-394 will be able to turn right and do a long merge into I-394 north like an expressway ramp without having to stop!! That'll help the backup in that direction!

I live directly off Steger and I 394. I can attest that the traffic can be horrendous during certain periods of the day. Sometimes I have to sit through three lights to make the left turn unto Steger to get home. And, in the mornings, I can spend seven minutes getting from Steger to Sauk Trail from my development that is less than a fourth of a mile from I-394.

I'd love to see a ramp rather than to sit through the many stop lights.

I was on 394 and Sauk Trail today when an SUV was in pursuit by police. The vehicle hit many of the construction barriers throwing them in all directions. One young women, in her attempt to get out of harms way as she was directly in front of the charging vehicle quickly turned on a side street that was right there for her--but she missed a pole by less than eight feet as she lost control of the car. She missed slamming into my auto by 3 feet.

She was so shakened, she had her little daughter, no more than two with her and she sobbed uncontrollably for a very very long time before being able to move on to her destination.
Am I in FAVOR of an overpass? Ah, Yes!

Crete talked at a couple meetings about a regional "route 394 corridor" study that's going on. Involves IDOT and all the towns along 394. So I think that means the old plan is out the window, time for a new plan.

The study does not go that far south. It stays on 394, not route 1
