AT&T U-verse vs. Time Warner (Insight)

I would like to get some opinions regarding AT&T U-verse.
I currently pay Time Warner (Insight)$178 a month for 3 HD boxes, 1 regular box, telephone service, Insightbb 20.0, and Cable (the HD package with HBO and free Showtime).
An AT&T U-verse rep just came by and said for $195 I could get 4 HD boxes with every HD channel they offer minus Hispanic and International channels, every movie channel they offer, telephone, 18.0 Internet, and phone. Other than being tied to them for a year what is the downside?
Does anyone else have any experience with ATT U-verse? I still have time to bail out as it will be almost a month before this all gets installed. That was also a concern as here I would be a new customer and it will take them a month to install this? What happens if something is not right? Will it take them a month to get back out to my house?
If anyone has opinions on either provider it would be greatly appreciated.

BTW I have 4 TV's and pay one price with Time Warner.
Why are you paying for each box separately?

It has been a few years but I believe I am paying around $15 rent on each HD box for a total combo bill of around $178.
The amount I pay isn't my concern as much as the quality of service of AT&T U-verse.
My home phone is something I want to keep and is a moot point. Different strokes...
I am looking for people who were with Insight and switched to AT&T U-Verse. I am curious regarding which one they preferred and why.

We switched to uverse from insight cause you get more channels, like the wireless receiver and you can watch recorded shows on any TV.We got a 2 year deal and locked price.

Thanks
I put on my "reading glasses" and was amazed at how many different channels AT&T U-verse carries that I would be getting. The only 2 packages I decided I didn't need were the International and the Spanish Channels (no offense to my hombre's but I no speak no Spanish).
It seemed like there's an ungodly amount of HD sports and movie channels. There is no way you could ever say "there's nothing on".

So I sign up with ATT U-verse on 6/27th and ordered cable, internet, and land-line. I also ported the phone number. The ATT service was to be installed 7/23/13. Time Warner cut my phone off sometime 6/28/13. When I called Friday night they told me the reason why I had no land-line service was because another telephone company owned the phone line and that by rules/laws they could not connect me back unless they had a signed release from ATT.
In reality I believe this was a ploy in an attempt to get me to stay with Time Warner by cutting off my land-line.
It took me 11 hours’ worth of telephone calls before Time Warner, ATT, and I all did a three way call.
Time Warner changed their tune and then reported that I had an issue on my end.
Then miraculously Time Warner "reset" my modem and I now have a dial tone.
I now believe Time Warner had attempted to hoodwink me and that this was an attempt to get me to stay with them by blaming ATT for somehow screwed up the order.
Once another telephone company (ATT) was on the same line with the customer (me) & Time Warner could not lie because ATT would know it was a lie.
At that point they (TW) pretended like they never said a word regarding the porting and the "ownership" and proclaimed I had a problem on my end.
Bottom-line is I think they just cycled my router and turned my phone back on. They denied previously telling me that regarding the porting and that I would need ATT to send them a signed release.
Insight (my former cable provider) treated me very well and while I had issues they promptly were out to fix whatever the issue was in a timely manner.
I am fearful of Times Warner. I have heard nightmare stories before they even got here (in town) and just spent 11 hours just to get my land line working again. Calling Customer Care at both TW and ATT both will take up hours of your life.
The point of this post is to be on guard as if you try to leave Time Warner and port your land-line they may deliberately cut you off and blame it on your new provider.
Personally I don't know which service is better but I have 30 days to try it out with free installation.
After that is completed I will tell everybody what I think and how everything went.

It took over a week for my old number to go over to ATT,and thats the first time that ever happened. Must be a new rule I guess..

Well, after all the hassle Time Warner retention did issue me a $57 credit on my bill. Little do they know it will be my last bill from them!

I cut over to AT&T and Direct TV in January. It took about a month of fighting with Insight to get them to release my phone number. But I finally got it worked out OK.

I get more and better channels with Direct TV. The reception is much better. I can't tell any difference with the internet and the phone. They work as well as Insight. But I am paying about $50 per month less.....

Ok, I guess I will be the guinea pig and give others a review of ATT U-Verse as I now have it installed.

There is a learning curve regarding the remotes but wow the amount of channels seems to be way more than with Insight/TWC. The channels appear instantly as apposed to Insight/TWC's delay and the quality of the picture is about the same.
Not that this ever was a concern but the music channels sound suck just like they have on every cable company I have ever been attached to. I do not know why the music channels do not play as loud as other channels but they just do.
The ATT U-Verse Internet is slow 7.5mb down and .73mb up. This is not at all what I am used to nor what ATT promised. They promised 18.0 download speeds but this slow upload speed is alarming because no one actually thinks about uploads. With Insight/TWC I had 20.0 - 30.0mb down and upload was 2.5mb. That is a big difference and if I was a gamer this would be a problem.
Also, ATT wants you to unplug their modem (to "reset it") but when you do that you just turned off your TV and Internet. The phone has a built in delay so I assume that still is connected. People in other rooms then start screaming. At least with Insight/TWC all that was effected by unplugging the modem was the Internet. Not so with ATT.
If I had to do it over I believe ATT TV might be better because of the amount of channels but TWC would still be my Internet provider.
Regarding the land-line, it really doesn't matter. Both work so I guess it's whoever has the better price.

So the ATT U-Verse guy just left and he explained that my house has uses 2 wires and they are giving me 25mbs. of signal. With every TV off the speed goes up. Every TV watching HDTV = 3mb of Internet signal. 2 TV's on watching HD = 12mb down Internet speeds.
Time Warner sends a dedicated signal and ATT makes me divide it up. I was also told that if I lived closer to the main hub I would get 35mbs to divide throughout my house. The rep just looked at me and said "they never explained any of this to you, did they"?
Apparently this is a common problem. The 70mb upload is not within specs though and someone else was going to fix that issue (next week).
They also have discounted 2 of the high def boxes for a year to 0 but another exit fee on each box if I leave early.($84 a box) So, after 30 days if I leave it will cost me $180 +$168 =$348. They would send a $150 rebate if I stay.$384 -$150 =$234 to leave. That number goes down ever month as the exit would be pro-rated. The $84 a box exit fee is fishy because they are having me pay for discounts I have not received. I could see if I left early paying for the free boxes but they are saying they want me to pay the extended discount price for a year even though I may not realize the discount. It's like taking a bet, a gamble. Leave after 6 months and the exit fee breaks more my way in regards to pro-ration.
Cable (everything including phone) went off (dead) twice yesterday but it may have been intentional as I was talking with reps over the phone.
Sometimes I feel sorry I ever answered the door to speak with the ATT rep. Maybe someone reading this will take my warning. I am not saying I will cancel, just that it has been a time consuming hassle so far.
