Job Corps is worth a second look

Mar 22, 2009 | Posted by: roboblogger | Full story: Kentucky.com

I know teachers who received pink slips last year and haven't found work yet. I also have unemployed friends who ran training programs to help others find work and now are fighting the sense of uselessness that sometimes accompanies joblessness.

I say that i attended job corps in delaware valley in new york for 3 months. it was a ok experience. but the way they handled the drugs and alchol was horrible. there were people smoking pot and drinking in plain view. i mean cmon. there would be security walking 10 feet away from somebody doing something wrong and no body cared. i mean if they want to make it safe then maybe they should obey and reinforce the in my opinion the low standerds for their center. hopefully this makes a difference
I could say many negative things about the staff, the student and the parents of the students from delaware valley job corps and have to agree with Mary about the drugs and alcohol problem on this center and the insanity that comes from the drinking like 5 hour riot where students will get hurt and when staff intervene they will get hit and students threatening staff and hitting staff and still allowed to continue being there. Or how if someone gets hurt staff have to argue with students to clear a path for emergency vehicles. Like I said I could mention many negative things about this place, but I can also say that there has been many wonderful things I could say too. I pray everyday about this job corps and hope that everyone there can figure out a way to make it better for all concerned both the students and staff and it will take everyone working together to solve these issues.RIP

Do you mean, does the center allow students to live off center and travel to the center to get their education/trade? As for Pine Knot No, all students stay in the dormitory. There are 4 dormitories total. You are not that far away from either Job Corps. You should try to schedule a tour.

I will say it again...not all Job Corps are the same. If I were thinking about Job Corps I would try to get to a Forest Service run center and not a contract center. Again, this is my personal opinion.
That's correct!

I work at Earle C. Clements Job Corps. I work with students in the the dorm, I'm an Residential Advisor (RA). I have worked there for 8 months. There are a lot of students that go there and actually do what is expected of them! I have seen many of my students graduate. It makes me proud to see them complete and move forward with their lives. There are those few students who just don't care and mess up, for the most part the students out there are kind, respectful and caring. Every where you go there are people who are just like the students in Job Corps's, at least they are not out there breaking the law. For some Job Corps is the only place where they have had a roof over their head, food in their belly and clothes on their back. I'm glad Job Corps is there to help people. Job Corps gives our young people a place to grow and become working Americans. I AM PROUD THAT I WORK THERE!! It takes a special kind of person to work there.
I am proud that YOU work there! If more people had your attitude, the world would be a better place!

I quit drugs when I came here to ECC, and have had nothing but positive change, the only issues I have had is people bringing problems from someplace outside the center and using it as an excuse to throw away their education. I am just here to learn, the worst thing I do is play cards. Im not what you describe as a typical jobcorps student and if you arent here then its an esoteric concept to you to begin with.

all that matters is, before I came here I had no clue what voltage or ohms or amps meant, now I can tell you the equation for capacitive inductance X = 2(Pi)fL

My problem with these types of programs is that an upper middle class white kid will never get a chance to go there. I know this through my experience with the Laborers union. They'll never "qualify".How bout we stop rewarding people who, for the most part, choose to underachieve and start rewarding the ones who work hard and try to achieve.
That is because the upper middle class can afford to go to school. My dad has been on and off having a steady job for about a year no and it's not his fault. Some ***hole blacklisted him on the job market because the ***hole didn't like my dad. It's not his fault. But I heard him talking to someone else on the phone saying that he just had to hold it together until I leave for Job Corps (in January) so that I don't have to watch him suffer through homelessness.

Bottom line, Job Corps is an amazing opportunity. Underprivileged youth get access to a High School diploma/GED, specialized career training, room and board, counseling, healthcare, dental care, eye care, counseling, resume and job skills assistance, allowances, a budget for professional clothing, a check for over $1000 to help transition after completing the program, all COMPLETELY FREE. Obviously the place is not going to be a 5 star resort. It really makes me angry that people are being given the opportunity of a lifetime completely free out of taxpayer money and have the nerve to complain. Job Corps is what YOU make of it. I attended Job Corps in Pennsylvania. I am a 23 year old white female from a very good upbringing, but my family simply did not have the finances to send me to college and I could not financially handle community college and full time minimum wage work. Job Corps is the best decision I ever made. I have never been one to involve myself in drama, I am very quiet and motivated in my studies. Was there drama and occasional issues at Job Corps? Yes. But it never affected me at all. Because being involved in that is a CHOICE. If you avoid the wrong kinds of people and make a few friends committed to success like you, you will be fine. For me Job Corps was an amazing GIFT and I took it and used it to the full advantages. I had no problem following rules, curfews, and a pretty strict routine because I was so grateful for the FREE education and assistance. I went to Job Corps with a high school diploma, so I was able to go right to my chosen vocation of certified nurse aide. After completing the CNA course I stayed and furthered my education. I got to attend the practical nursing program. These programs normally range from $10,000-$20,000 and I obtained my schooling and licensing absolutely free. I am now happily employed as a nurse and my job is paying for me to complete my RN degree. Job Corps is what YOU make of it. There are people out there who want to help you. LET THEM!

Very proud of you. But you are a small positive stat and this is why the cut has been made to the program. Add up just what the government spent on You then you can see why this program has had cuts and closer ..

I believe Job Corps is a wonderful opportunity for kids. Whoever is saying the "Carl D. Perkins" in Prestonsburg is awful, is clearly wrong. The job corp offers kids opportunities as well as any other school would. In the past, I am unsure of what all has happened, however, now the Job Corp is wonderful. Rethink what you're saying, or at least learn more about it first.

You should call the admissions line and speak to the counselor for your area, and see what they say. explain to them that what you said here.
