Hiroo Onoda, held his post and followed his orders with perserverence, a full 29 years After the war had ended. He did not know WWII had ended, and continued to hold his post long after his small group had died leaving him alone on the Lubang Island. His dedication to country and self sacrifice made him a Japanese war hero. He was paid his 30 year wages, and retired to civilian life. I like his quote:

"One must always be civic-minded. Every minute of every day, for 30 years, I served my country. I have never even wondered if that was good or bad for me as an individual".

He would of made a great American.

The opossums must have gotten all the persimmons around here. Make sure the ones that you eat are good and ripe so they don't make your mouth pukker up and somebody mistake it that you might be wanting to kiss their butt. LOL
My guess is that the PawPaw trees all died out a long time ago. Do you remember them? They were about like a banana and were not any good until they were almost rotten. I can only remember one of those trees on Grandpappy's old hillside farm. But they bulldozed that entire hill to make pasture land. Even tore down Granny's June apple trees and now we don't even have any June bugs to tie a string to their legs and run around following them as they fly. But then there isn't much barefoot running going on anymore either.
I think I am going to try and patent persimmon glue. Lol. I think it has great potential. I have stepped in them several times, they won't hardly wash off after they dry. I had to take my pocket knife and scrape them off. That wasn't easy either.

When I was a kid we had a Paw Paw tree growing on a hillside. I have eaten the ripe ones many times. Lots of big seed. Lol. I would love to have some Paw Paw trees. Where I lived before here, my neighbor hsd dug up two small ones on his father in laws farm and planted them in his yard. I haven't been back to see if they lived.

AW, you might know. I have one Witch Hazel. Last fall it was loaded with seed for the first time. I gathered them just before they were ready to fall off and still have them. I have read the best time to plant them is late fall. Would you happen to know? I think most of them have been dozed too. I don;t know if they would sprout after all this time or not, but it's worth a try. I love those odd looking yellow blooms during the Winter.

I do remember my folks mention of calling for the "dead wagon". Lol.

After I made that post, I got to wondering more about the PawPaw trees and fruit, so I looked it up on the internet and found there are several places where you can buy those. I don't know about the Witch Hazel but it might be something you can research also and if you already have the seeds, you are right in that it is worth a try.

When I was young, I came up on an old dead donkey that they had not called for the dead wagon and I kicked the carcass. Out ran an Opossum and several "rice" LOL It was many years after that before I could eat any rice and I have yet to eat an opossum and won't as long as I have the flea market peanut butter LOL.

I saw something about that on TV many years ago and he "surrendered" after all those years of isolation and did that reluctantly.

It is funny reading about the dead wagon. It was a fact of life back when--don`t know if it is still in action. My neighbor had a cow that got down in the back,we tried to get her up with straps around the middle tied to the barn rafters, nothing worked. He in turn called somewhere and got help from a dog food manufacturer that took the cow away.None of us wanted to bury her.Just think of the hole we would have had to dig!But someone does pick up the road kill! What is that---dead wagon?

The dead wagon that I remember was a single axle dump truck that had a hoist somewhat like a wrecker and a rolled tarp on the front that they unrolled to cover the remains. I once came upon a full load that they had not tarped. Geez I had to stop and wait for the dead wagon to go on. I think the county road departments now pickup road kill such as deer and such and most likely take to the landfill. I doubt seriously that the carcasses are taken to the dog food or soap factories anymore.

Thanks for the information. I will look that up on the Paw Paw trees. I have previously looked up the Witch Hazel, a few clips on YouTube, but I didn't find find much on planting. That does sound right though, many wild herb seed have to go through cold, freezing, thawing, etc. to break natures protective coating on them.

LOL, on the donkey carcas, rice and Opossum. I can see where you wouldn't want rice for a while or Opossum at all.

There was a dead cow back behind our place a neighbor had just left there to rot. It was well baked in the summer Sun. One of my many dogs I had growing up of course had a meal off of it. My dad had started to go to the country store. He went back to the house and left the door open on the ol' 53 Ford. I heard daddy yelling, I came and looked, my ol dog was sitting up in the middle of the back seat and had puked that mess up. LOL. Daddy got the dog out and cleaned the mess up. I never did figure our which smelled the worst, the dog puke or thr Pine-Sol. The car still smelled like someone has puked up a pine tree the day he junked it. LOL. Gees, no I didn't let daddy see me laughing. I made myself scarce while he was fussing and cleaning, took my dog with me too. Hehehe.

A rendering company about 50 miles from where I live comes and gets dead livestock for free. They come in a big dump truck sort of thing and have a wench. There is some kind of law about "proper and timely disposal" of animal carcasses in KY.

Maybe they still do exist. I just have not seen any in the last several years. Probably just as well LOL

AW, my neighbor still has paw paw trees, we make paw paw bread with them, like banana bread. Some summers they produce and some summers they haven't borne much fruit. Don't know why. Paw Paw trees do seem more scarce than they used to.

Una, here is a website about witch hazel. I keep a bottle of witch hazel in the house all the time, its good for so many little things, like stings, scratches, etc. After looking at the site, I now want a witch hazel bush too! Good luck with your planting.

Daily Horoscope for May 25

Aquarius

You're very feisty and energetic and there's a lot you want to achieve. You'll get rather impatient if anyone stands in your way. A close emotional relationship will either be sexy and exciting beyond belief, or bad-tempered and tetchy. If you're in a grumpy mood, try to work out why - and what would improve matters. One thing that's bound to help is physical exercise, because it will burn off any excess nervous energy.
