Lockport has a Dollar General Store, a Family Dollar Store and a Big Lots. Whatís the hold up on the Dollar Tree Store? I feel like I live in a quality retail store desert. Canít you at least give me a Kohlís? Can you help a honkey out here?

Don't worry. I read in the Legend that Alderman Turner feels your pain - when you have to drive all the way to Orland to buy something.

I am sure sure that his obsession with getting your water bill lowered will bring in the retail Lockport is missing

And of course, thanks to Kelly, we have no viable retail to speak of.

Couldn't agree more. Taxes here are outrageous and we really don't have anything to show for it. Do we need all these Alderman for a town with a population of 28k? Especially since they do absolutely NOTHING. Can't wait to VOTE OUT EVERY INCUMBENT NEXT YEAR.

My real estate taxes are $10,600.00 per year. Above and beyond the bare minimum of services that most every town has like police, fire and emergency services what exactly am I getting for that huge bill? I certainly donít get a developed downtown with quality sit-down restaurants and retail shopping. I get Big Lots, Dollar General, Family Dollar, more auto parts stores than you can shake a stick at and burned down buildings in my downtown. Take a look around, the only thing separating Lockport from Posen, Markham or Harvey is that there are still more white people here than there. How long do you think that will last as the cityís infrastructure continues to deteriorate and we fall further and further behind neighboring communities in development? The leadership in this towns sucks with a CAPITAL ďSĒ! They all need to go next election.

If you drive through any of those communities you'd realize that they actually have more retail and more sit down restaurants right now than we do. The only thing they have that we don't is that we don't is Dixie Square Mall, but our downtown is beginning to resemble that even.

I always tell people to understand their tax bill as well. For me the City of Lockport was ~9% of my total tax bill. I hate the way our city runs, but considering the police and infrastructure they provide that doesn't seem too bad.

I am a huge proponent of education, but the schools are what kill my bill.

Exactly.

People bitch about "my taxes are x dollars per year" all the time. Yet, very few people actually look at their tax bill. You are correct with the percentage that you paid to Lockport. For a tax bill of $10,000 the taxes paid to the City of Lockport is approximately $1000.

So it really makes no sense to me that anyone would fall for the "vote for me and I'll lower your taxes" BS when it comes to someone running for Alderman or Mayor. Have you actually looked at the amount you paid to the City of Lockport and compared it to what you paid five years ago? No? You'll be surprised to find that your taxes are almost the same. That's right, the same.

Why is that? Because the EAV of your home has dropped. As a result your home value has stabilized over the past four years. This is quite different than what happened the four years prior to 2008 when your EAV was increasing every year.

Without an increase in your EAV then it is probable that your taxes for 2012 for the City of Lockport will be very close to what you paid for 2011. What does this mean? The city staff has done a damn good job keeping expenses down. That also means that the previous two councils did a pretty damn good job looking into the future and getting the spending under control.

What that also means is that the current council, warts and all, have had no effect at all on your tax bill.

It's because you did not vote for the new high school,

I told everyone that the new school would bring boundless prosperity
to the area, instead of wanting a Target or Kohl's we'd had a Lord & Taylor's or a Neiman Marcus by now and maybe even a Rolls Royce Dealership.

We will never vote for a new high school..ever! Go on dreaming! Because it is a dream that will never be fulfilled! We are perfectly content with our high school as it is and that land the high school owns should be sold and improvements put into the central high school. This is an economy where the high school needs to tighten its belt and we want to see it! The people will get out and vote that down every time so make your plans, Gary and tell it to the birds, because maybe they will listen! If we have any money in this town after this council is done with our taxpayer dollars, the downtown looks like a ghost town right now. That is where it should go not to a new mansion of a high school. Have you looked at the foreclosures lately? I have and it is deplorable that so many people are losing their homes. Keep trying, as it will do you NO good.

Nice distraction from the real problems of why Lockport is in the shape it's in. Now you got Juan talking about the past. Keep your FOCUS on the future! The future is getting rid of the "Slimys" in the next election and not voting for anybody that they support. FIXED ON COURSE UNTIL SUCCESSFUL is the message from now until the April election.

Yes, and he is always trying to deflect from the real problems that they have made by this majority. It has to be told to the residents. They need to know that their money has not been put to good use at all. They need to interview and find out all things about their candidates. It cannot come from some lies on postcards. It must be a priority of the people running to get their message out that we do not want people that spend money on no bid contracts, etc. and do nothing for this town but put it in the position it is now. After two years these people have NO record to run on. They can only talk about others not themselves. That is a strong point for people running. I applaud the people who stood up and put this council on the front burner. They are heroes in my eyes and others I have talked to. Election time can't come too soon! We need to get to the ballot box and urge our neighbors to do the same and vote for honesty, transparency, accountability, and for the taxpayers to be heard. The fact that they have been treated like dirt balls at the meetings is a fact that needs to be brought out! THE GOOD PEOPLE OF LOCKPORT NEED TO KNOW WHO THEY ARE VOTING FOR!!!! TELL US WHY!!!!!!!!!! GET SOME ANSWERS FROM THEM WHEN YOU ASK....TELL US WHY!!!!!!!!!!
