Our View: Ban trucks from Angeles Crest

There are 8 comments on the San Gabriel Valley Tribune story from Apr 2, 2009, titled Our View: Ban trucks from Angeles Crest. In it, San Gabriel Valley Tribune reports that:

THERE is no room for compromise or subtlety, no on the one hand this, on the other hand that, no time for studies in the matter of big-rig trucks and the Angeles Crest Highway: From this day forward, no trucks hauling large cargoes should ever again drive over the mountain road from the high desert to La Canada Flintridge.

Has anyone interviewed the driver and gotten his story?

I've used this route many times and have never seen a tractor trailer hauling doubles on this highway, that's because they are already prohibited.

Unless due to weather, tractor trailers hauling triples traverse the Rockies and other mountain ranges, with grades more severe than the one in question.

Let us not over react, when what we really need are increased safety measures, such as a mandatory break check point, and effective escape areas, and the manpower to enforce the current laws. Without enforcement, laws, rules, and regulations are worthless.

"Incredibly steep?" Has the author never been outside L.A. County? Big rigs manage to traverse the Rockies and Sierra Nevada without problems. It seems the real issue here is the existing unmaintained, unmarked runaway truck lane that LCF officials turned into some sort of useless flower garden. Put it back into operation, and put some signs up so truckers know it is there for their use.

Since there is no way to effectively determine whether a driver is actually capable of driving a big rig on this treacherous roadway, the only sesible solution is to ban them completely. There are plenty of other ways to get into LA. If the truckers don't like to sit in traffic,tough--they are the main reason it so bad.

No, they are the main reason you have food to eat and clothes to wear. The main reason traffic is so bad is that we have 2 million uninsured illegal aliens on Los Angeles freeways.

Why couldn't the victim use the 710 from Long Beach to Palmdale? Do the people blocking hyway progress use any of the existing freeways others moved for?

have researched and found that over 200 accidents have occurred on this section of the highway. This person should be commended.... because she stood up and nobody lisened.

Please go to www..dangeroustrailers.org Since 1976 14,810 people have been killed... since 1988 over 449,950 people have been injured by Passenger Cars that tow trailers.

And just like in this case.... NOBODY IS LISENING... do you know why... because it is cheeper to pay a lawsuit claim then FIX THE PROBLEM . Make no mistake the insurance company's have figured it out that they are willing to sacafice lives and pay a lawsuit that will take years, years and even more years.... and get appealed, appealed...and appealed....We have a defective Trailer Hitch and it has taken 10 years to get a result and now the they are going to guess what..... appeal.....don't you think she has suffered enough....go here to see...http://judgementscasetri alsandsettlements.blogspot.com /2009/01/jury-awards-woman-86- million-dollars.html

and now look at this blog...It make more sense for city and state agencies responsible for the maintenance of highways to make improvements to these to make them safer instead of having to deal with California truck accident lawyers after a tragic crash like this.

Trailer Detachment - The “Hidden” Cause Of Multiple Fatalities and Catastrophic Injuries - An Experienced Philadelphia Product Liability Lawyer Speaks Out

For many months, I have been blogging about the dangers of defective trailer hitches and the lack of safety posed to otherwise innocent and unsuspecting victims by many trailers being pulled by vehicles. According to NHTSA statistics, every week in the United States there are 418 injuries, 8 deaths and 775 incidents of property damage caused by vehicles towing trailers. One of the unsung heroes of the defective trailer crisis in an individual known as Ron Melancon who maintains a website at his own expense known as dangeroustrailers.org . Ron maintains a daily vigil on trailer accidents occurring throughout the United States and the world and has tirelessly worked on behalf of those injured by these vehicles to lobby the government and industry to mandate safer standards, guidelines and quality control.

Recently an incident occurred in Oregon where a trailer being pulled by an RV came loose while transiting thorough a tunnel causing another vehicle traveling in the opposite direction to crash head on into the trailer. It is important to recognize that the utility trailer industry has continued to stop any attempts to improve trailer safety. It is continuously important to recognize that trailers under the weight of 3,000 lbs. are unregulated in most states in this country. State codes in most of our states are silent as to any design or construction specification for those vehicles or for towing chains and hitches. The utility trailer industry maintains a strong lobby to stop any attempts to improve this class of vehicle in all 50 states by not requiring a federal standard on trailer hitches since 1972.

The defective trailer hitch attorneys at Reiff and Bily join Ron Melancon and other committed consumer safety advocates to bring a new national standard to implement, improve, reduce and eliminate deaths and catastrophic injuries due to defective trailer hitches and defective trailer manufacturer. If you or a loved one has been involved in an accident resulting from a defective trailer or caused by a trailer being towed by another vehicle, please contact the defective trailer and defective trailer hitch attorneys at Reiff and Bily

It will take at least 10 years for this case to go through the courts.... why...make the families suffer even more.... and it will take California years and years and years to fix this roadway.....

I commend the Girl Scout.... I know what she is going through.

Simply put.... look at these videos... and children that have been killed by un Regulated Utility trailers...

I have been told that it would simply cost to much to fix this issue.. and in the case that just happened in your state the insurance industry and the trucking industry has most likely lobbied not to fix the roadway because it would cost to much money.

Child 4.. killed...nothing is done..http://dangeroustrailers viedos.blogspot.com/2009/02/do cumentary-featured-in-bbc-finl ay.html

Father and 2 of his children killed...nothing is done..
http://www.dangeroustrailers.org/The_Coburn_F...

Two Texas students killed nothing is done...
http://dangeroustrailers.blogspot.com/2008/02...

A women is killed her child survived nothing is done...
http://www.dangeroustrailers.org/Accidents_Pe...

A brother is killed.... nothing is done..
http://www.dangeroustrailers.org/The_Gunter_F...

Another father and two of his triplets are killed.... nothing is done..
http://dangeroustrailersviedos.blogspot.com/2...

A mother is killed in front of her children... nothing is done..
http://dangeroustrailersaccidentsthatjust.blo...

A trailer comes loose on the bay bridge in Maryland... killing three....nothing is done..
http://highlightingthebaybridgeaccidentmay11....

So now we know that nothing get done anymore because the industry has lobbied against
making improvements because it will cost time and money.....

Why do people have to be killed before we address these pressing issues...?
