It's good he was found legally ineligible to teach and was stripped of his benefits from the school system.

I haven't spoken to him in over 2 years, I don't know a thing. And other kids ARE protected, he's not allowed to teach anymore. I guess it IS good that he can't teach anymore, though it is a shame he did something stupid to mess up his life like this.

What's with the hysteria about protecting kids? His transgression did not involve children! Although he made a serious mistake, he is essentially a good person. I see this as an issue
of human frailty vs. public hysteria. Seeing people turn against him makes me feel sorry for him. He lost a lot.

I was very surprised when I heard about this whole thing. Mr. Mandalakis always seemed like a good person. He was my first clarinet teacher, and he taught me a lot of what I know. Plus, he had a great sense of humor. Last year, at county band auditions, he was present (despite no longer being a teacher), and he helped me get through my audition (because, I was nervous. Like, the sweating, shaking, ranting, about to have a nervous breakdown kind of nervous) by - what else?- cracking jokes. If it were not for the fact that there were people who saw him in that bathroom, I would not have believed it. He's a great guy, and, after all, everyone makes mistakes, right?

You should not defend what you do not know!
Are you that sure there are no victoms out there?
Do you know his backround? His history? What issues he has had with males? Was this the first time he had sex in public, or just the first time he was caught?

Is it hysteria to want to protect children? If a person is unable to control themselves to the point of having sex in a public restroom, what other things are they unable to control?

Would you want your child/children in a room, church,or anywhere with someone who would have sex in a public restroom? Remember, any man or boy could have walked in to see that display. UNHEALTHY on many levels.

He is teaching again. How does this happen? He is an instructor for classes in Byzantine Musicology/History Component. The Greek Orthodox Metropolis of Atlanta, GA feels it is ok for him to instruct some of there on-line classes.

Thank you for illustrating my point about public hysteria.

You should not assert what you do not know!
Are you that sure there ARE victims out there?
The truth is, I don't know, but then neither do you, so let's not allow our imaginations to be fueled by panic and wild speculation. That's hysteria.

You asked: Is it hysteria to want to protect children?

I ask: What children are you making reference to?

His offense did not involve children. OK?

You seem to consider him The Degenerate of the Century, a potential danger to the students. In reality, BHS students were very fond of him and
were sad to see this happen and sad to see him go. The student in this forum (Sept. 8th) liked his sense of humor. He seemed to be very popular.

At this point it is highly unlikely he will teach in a high school again, due to the conviction, and the online class he is teaching is obviously geared toward adults, so the concern of him teaching non-adult students seems to be a non-issue at this point.

I am in no way defending his misdeed. Who would? He obviously messed up and is paying the price. When I first found out about this, my initial feeling was shock. My second feeling was pity. I knew a gloating, self-righteous, torch-carrying mob would be working themselves into a froth over this.

Why did he mess up? Is it because he's evil and perverted? If we don't let our emotions cloud our insight, we might consider that he is human, and therefore subject to the weaknesses and imperfections of being human.

You stated that you do not know.
Here is a quote as reported by Catherine Holahan for The Record 2005 holahan@northjersey.com
" Mandalakis testified Wednesday that he went out of his way to go to the rest stop because he wanted to masturbate with a stranger and the place was known for such behavior. " "I had observed that kind of behavior before" stated Mandalakis.
Is this just an imperfection to you?

You stated that he seemed to be popular, which means what? He is a great person based on the fact that people knew him?

He made a kid laugh at band auditions. He was just being the great guy he is, right?
No, question as to why a he would attend teen band auditions, right after losing his appeal again?( Any teacher in the state of New Jersey convicted of crimes of a sexual nature can no longer teach. Which means his conviction was enough of a reason to not allow him access to students and take away his teaching license. Is the state hysterical too? Or did they allow their emotions to cloud their insight?)

I am sure that Senator Larry Craig has a sense of humor and by your account is very popular too. Let's elect him president.

This offense did not involve children. Oh, ok, so drop the subject.
Let's not lose sight of the seriousness of his actions.

Any person who works for the public and who committed flagrantly lewd , offensive acts and is convicted of such acts should not be looked at as a person who made an error or a had a moment of weakness, they are a criminal. Hysteria no, fact yes.

Parents should take this opportunity to check in with their kids and make sure that there was not such imperfections or lack of judgments made with or around their children.

People have the right to know if their neighbor, choir director, or anyone who is around their children has been convicted of a sex crime, be it with an adult or child. Knowledge is power.

Pity is for people who had bad things happen to them, not for people who make the choice to do bad things.

By giving this the label hysteria,it may cause someone not to ask questions because they are afraid that people such as yourself will call them hysterical. Or even worse not believe them.

The point was to be informed. Not panic, but not allow ourselves to be victimized again.

The people of Bergenfield deserve at least that much.

"YOU STATED THAT YOU DO NOT KNOW"
Actually, you said that there may be victims out there. I said I do not know, but then neither do you. Then you go on to quote a Record newspaper article that had nothing to do with what I was talking about. The article didn't deal with any victims at all.

"IS THE STATE HYSTERICAL TOO?"
The state went on to enforce its laws, as it usually does. The state went through its usual procedures. The state, however, does not yap incessantly on internet forums about victims that do not exist. If the state accuses a citizen with unsubstantiated charges, like the Duke University rape hoax, the prosecutor can lose his job and be prosecuted in turn.

I never said Senator Larry Craig was popular, so don't put words into my mouth.

"THIS OFFENSE DID NOT INVOLVE CHILDREN. OH, OK, SO DROP THE SUBJECT" Then in the lines that follow, you start raving about children again. Total Hysteria.

"THE POINT WAS TO BE INFORMED. NOT PANIC, BUT NOT ALLOW OURSELVES TO BE VICTIMIZED AGAIN"
Victimized again by what? Were we victimized in the first place? Who? Where? When?

Like I said in the previous posting, I do not defend his misconduct. The law was implemented after his conviction and that's just the way it is.

The crux of what I am saying is this: Do you have to gloat over his adversity? Vicious, petty people GET OFF on other peoples losses. They love to point out that the offender did WRONG, and then imply other things the offender is not guilty of. Mr. Mandalakis is in a vulnerable position, but he paid for what happened, so you don't have to do a victory jig on his misfortune.

I think what prompted me to write on this forum was the unnecessary insinuations that Parent from Dumont keeps obsessing over. I HAPPEN TO THINK IT IS DESPICABLE TO KICK SOMEONE WHEN THEY ARE DOWN. He was convicted and lost his job, Parent, aren't
you happy enough with that?

Don't bother typing away until midnight to answer this. Tomorrow is a busy day and I won't have time to read your miserable blather over the weekend. Unlike you, I have a life.

Most people only defend family with such tenacity, but good for you to defend someone you never met!

It is rare that a complete stranger would get so incensed and blurt out such hatred to defend someone who masturbates in public restrooms.
But again, good for you.

You must not have read the entire article to get the point of it. It had nothing to do with victims. It answered other questions.

Again the point was to inform. Not personal.

Obsessing, gloating, a victory jig,and all the other hoopla you mentioned, taking things a little PERSONALLY?

You must not have that great a life, if all you have to do is read my miserable blather, pick it apart bit by bit, and react with such anger and intensity.

It is a posting buddy. It is a place for everyone to state their opinion. You don't have to agree with with everyone, but everyone has the to speak their mind.

You do not have the right to tell anyone not to write in because it makes you full of rage.

Other people may want to log on. They have the right to get the chance to read each posting and decide for themselves how they want to react.

Hope you had an enjoyable weekend.

I read the articles about this incident in the Record when they originally appeared in 2005. The article you quoted goes back to March of that year. I googled it but could not retrieve it from an internet site that required membership and a password. My guess is that you have the original Record newspaper article(s). If so, why did you hold on to them for so long? What is going on here?

You said most people only defend family with such tenacity. You have claimed multiple times with total certainty that I never met him. How could you know something like that? Unless....hmmm.

In the last posting I made it crystal-clear what my motives were, but you dismissed it as hoopla. I just don't get you.

He did stupid things. But you know what? He really was a great teacher, I don't care what the hell anyone says. It really sucks that he messed up so badly for this to happen. I know a few of my friends who still keep in touch with him and feel the same way I do.

Just in case you ever stumble upon this, Mr. M, there are still some of us who miss you and wish this hadn't happened, even though almost everyone that had you as a choir director has graduated at this point.

I don't know who it was that posted on September 8th, although I have a pretty good idea, but I was at those auditions and I really wish I'd had the chance to see Mr. M.

A little more information for those of you who read this from time to time.. The fore mentioned music teacher was honored and celebrated, yes that's right honored and celebrated by the members of the St Anthony's church choir of Bergenfield for recording and selling a music CD.

It's fascinating that Stratos Mandalakis was arrested and convicted of a crime regarding a lewd act, namely, public masturbation, and at the same time in the same men's room a Haitian man was also engaged in what a court of law later determined was a crime involving lewdness, namely, public masturbation. The information about the matter will always be present on the World Wide Web and anyone who ever in the future does a google search for "Stratos Mandalakis" will see numerous stories about the conviction for lewd behaviour.

If the Haitian man from the case is researched the case information can be found. The other man he was not a music supervisor for a awarding winning school district, a adult/children's church choir director or in the public eye as often, if ever before his arrest.
People have been able to read boastful stories for years about Mandalakis before his arrest and conviction.

The other man did state that he did not know that the rest stop had that type of reputation true or not that was the crux of his case
where as, Mandalakis stated that he went out of his way to go to the rest stop and masturbate with a stranger, that he was bisexual and had problem. All of which can be found on the world wide web.
