Vincent is a strong supporter of public schools. Nikki wants to give "tax credits" (formerly called vouchers) which won't help those below the poverty income level who make so little income they don't even pay taxes. A "credit" wouldn't be enough to pay a private school tuition anyway and don't forget a "credit" doesn't get paid up front and you'd still need to provide the transportation. This again, is just helping those who are not in need and creating a divisive community. That's not leadership, that's sticking your head in the sand to avoid the issue. Vincent wants to make sure all students get an excellent education now.

S.C. Superintendent of Education Jim Rex and his army of educrats have been bemoaning so-called “budget cuts” for years, but raw fiscal data released this week by the S.C. Budget and Control Board shows that South Carolina’s public schools are (once again) getting more money than ever before.

In fact, according to a report released by the Board’s Office of Research and Statistics, public schools received a total of $8.8 billion dollars in 2009 – a $400 million increase in funding from the previous year. That works out to a record $12,268 per pupil – and that figure doesn’t even include funding obtained through bond referendums or cash stored away in reserve accounts.

All told, S.C. taxpayers spent 4.7 percent more on public education in 2009 than they did in 2008. Last year’s increase – which also took place during one of the worst economic years on record – was 4.5 percent.

To view the data for yourself click here.

As was the case a year ago, increases in non-classroom expenditures are once again eating up the vast majority of the new money. In fact, the percentage of total education funding devoted to the classroom slipped from 44.3 to 43.8 percent – even as classrooms received $105 million in new money.

Now … what have Palmetto taxpayers received for this massive investment (most of which went to fund new layers of bureaucracy)?

Well, South Carolina’s public education system has continued to produce nothing but incremental gains among white students while relegating another generation of black students to second-class status – even as black “leaders” continue embracing the failed status quo.

South Carolina’s overall graduation rate remains among the worst in the nation – which is consistent with our state’s declining SAT and stagnating ACT scores. Also, South Carolina’s rural graduation rate ranks dead last in the country. Meanwhile, our overall graduation rate has improved by a meager 1.5 percent over the last decade – one of the worst percentage improvements in the entire country.

In an effort to hide these miserable outcomes from parents, Rex and his fellow educrats (along with House Speaker Bobby Harrell and “Republican” lobbyist J. Warren Tompkins) have been working hard to dumb down the state’s costly and inefficient academic assessments. Also, South Carolina remains the only state in America that does not release graduation rates for minority students – yet another effort to conceal the generational failure of our current system.

Worse still? Neither GOP gubernatorial nominee Nikki Haley nor Democratic gubernatorial nominee Vincent Sheheen are committed to the reforms necessary to turn things around. In fact, both have released education “reform” plans that largely tinker around the edges of these chronic problems (for more on those proposals, click here and here).

She is a transparent fake like other Republicans. She may be easier on the eyes but she has the same fleas as the Pubs before her. By the way, does anyone know if the allegations of her possibly being an adultress are true or staged to gain sympathy votes in the primary? If so, then all of you Haley supporters are as gullible as the head of a nail.

Sheheen is a part of the same Socialist machine that has the economy at a standstill. Until the wealthy get over feeling threatened by the Government they will not use their money = their money will sit still as it is now, the economy will continue to erode, put conservatives in control, the money will free up and the stagnant recession will be over. Niki Haley
and every other official the leans conservative/pro capitalism.

What is sad about Shaheen is he has stuck with the old South Carolina method of dirty politics. You can't beat em on your record, so just go out and slam all the dirt you can find on your opponent. I may not agree with everything about Haley, but at least she hasn't stepped as low as to what Sheehan is doing.. Sheehan is doing the only thing he can think of to win. It's called dirty politicing. True or not it doesnt matter.

Another vote for Haley.

In an acknowledgment that the race for S.C. governor is indeed “closer than most people think,” the Republican Governor’s Association (RGA) has launched a new television ad bashing Democratic nominee Vincent Sheheen as “an Obama liberal in our own backyard.”

The size of the ad buy was not immediately available, although the RGA has plenty of money to spend in support of its nominee, State Rep. Nikki Haley.

At first … it’s unclear who the ad is targeting, as a litany of incriminating positions are recanted in front of a black shadow cutout.

“He supports big government stimulus spending, opposes enacting Arizona’s illegal immigration law and supports government control of health care,” the ad’s male narrator says, with a picture of Barack Obama gradually coming into focus in the background.

“Think we’re talking about Barack Obama?” the narrator asks.“We’re not. We’re talking about liberal Columbia insider Vincent Sheheen.”

Courtesy of The Politico, here’s the spot:

Nice …

Dispensing momentarily with the political realities that forced the RGA to get involved in what was supposed to be a Republican landslide, this is a very solid message. In fact, it’s a much better spot than the cookie-cutter negative ad that was released last month by Haley’s campaign … and it should be a good counterpunch to Sheheen’s latest negative ad against Haley.
