I wasn't disagreeing with you but I see where you're coming from regarding La Brea. It makes sense. I also agree that the oil has been here forever and will be here after we're gone, that was one of my points.

If the Earth and the ocean didn't cleanse itself, the California coast would be dead from the seeps that are spewing the same amount of oil that the Gulf spill is.

The environmentalists don't want to answer this, though. According to them, the Gulf will forever be dead.

i think Obama is emptying the treasury and i think he's going to Fort Knox with a wheelbarrow and carrying out gold bars when nobody's looking. i think he's piling up a big stash - like $100 billion - to take with him after he gets voted out. then he'll go to central America or Africa or somewhere and just laugh at us. "I ripped all you dumb Americans off, you dumb bastards HAHAHA" that's what Obama is ACTUALLY up to. Truth is he doesn't want to transform America, that's all just a phony baloney ruse. You're splitting hairs on terminology. The seep off of the Santa Barbara, California coast, that's been active for thousands of years by the way, that Theseus and I were talking about is "seeping" an estimated 5,280 to 6,600 gallons of oil per day.

That's the estimated equivalent of the current Gulf of Mexico oil spill.

Let me write it again. The amount of oil your "gusher" and my "seep" is putting out is the same!

OK let's just say for the sake of argument that what you say is correct (I'm sorry but I don't have the time right now to read all your citations).

Since the seepage has in your own words been going on for thousands of years wouldn't that be enough time for the ecology of the area to have adapted to it?

And I apologize, I see that I wasn't entirely clear when I talked about ecological damage. I should have made it clear that I was also referring to shoreline. There's marshland that is now beginning to be heavily damaged by the oil that is coming ashore. This marshland is not use to being heavily inundated with oil so it can't adapt fast enough and both the wildlife and plant life there is in danger of being killed off.

There are also fisheries in the area that can be heavily damaged by the incoming oil. And fish in the affected ocean area that can be killed off or driven away and that can have a devastating effect on the livelihoods of area fishermen. Again that is because the area simply hasn't had the thousands of years to adapt itself to a heavy oil presence.

This is a man made disaster precisely because of the time frame and the effect it has on HUMANS as well as the local ecology. All of human history is a mere blink of an eye in terms of geological time. If there are any cases where oil spontaneously came bursting out of the ground without any attempts to drill for it by man and that the oil damaged the ecology around it as a result then I would say that in that case it was a natural disaster.

But THIS wasn't a natural disaster. It was man made. And it was man made (in my opinion) by BP corporate decisions. And that's why I think BP should be held accountable and made to pay for everything.

I agree. Yet it's only a matter of degree. The earth will eventually take care of itself. And, sooner than the ecomaniacs will ever admit to.

The second most drastic results, behind the 11 who were killed, is the negative economic impact upon the folks in the region.

The very last thing we should be talking about is the political fallout from this.
