Was tending bar at the "Boo" one Sunday night when Tom Waits and his manager walked in. I remenber thinking to myself "holy shit I'm gonna get robbed" Two scary looking dudes.
Listening to Tom Waits boot from 11/09/1976 Shaboo show, during the intro to Phantom 309, he mentions the East Brook Mall "I love this little shopping center down here. We got in here early just so I could hang around there, heh-heh". A little bit later he gives a shoutout to Willi "Things have always been quiet in Putnam County, almost as quiet as a Saturday Night in Willimantic Connecticut"

Of course, 36 years later, the EBM has spread so far as to obliterate the very hillside where the Shaboo used to be and Willimantic Connecticut is even quieter than that night in '76 when Tom Waits and his Nocturnal Emissions cruised through with the Ghosts of Saturday Night.

Elvin Bishop "Juke Joint Jump"

Picture this - you've driven 45 minutes down these twisty, hilly state highways past the glow-in-the-dark Smokey the Bear (if you've been there, you know what I mean) drinkin' a beer or three while smokin' a twisty-wait, didn't I say that already?

Finally onto good old U.S. Route 6 - the same U.S. Route that used to run from the very tip of Cape Cod AKA Provincetown, MA stickin' way out there in the Atlantic Ocean all the way across the country to the freakin' Pacific Shore until California screwed up the maps forevermore by terminating Route Six at it's border - until you know yer gettin' close because of the 1/2-mile-long stretch of Interstate-type Divided Highway out in the Middle of Nowhere (again, if you've been there...)

Suddenly on the right is that green street sign "Conantville Road" so you turn and start following an even-twistier little back road until there is a stop sign...damn, do we go straight or turn left onto this even-smaller side lane??

Good luck choosing if the night is young but if you're getting there after 9 PM just turn off the car engine and listen...off to the left through the woods...SHABOO! So turn onto that tiny lane and prepare to ROCK 'N' ROLL!!

http://www.youtube.com/watch...

Don't be fooled by the picture of the little ol' roadside barbeque beer garden in the video - just listen to the lyrics as Elvin Bishop sings

There's a jumpin' little juke joint
way out in the sticks
half a mile down a dirt road
offa Highway Six.
Ain't near no town,
ain't close to no city -
those folks get down
til it's a doggone pity!
Ol' Bishop's's band
playing that low down funk.
Man you oughta see that little ol'
juke joint jump, jump, jump!!

Sometimes I think Shaboo was just a dream I had. Saw so many great artists there while I was in college at U.of Hartford from '72 to '76 but Larry Coryell and the 11th House (with the Brecker Brothers) changed my life forever ... made me more serious about my own jazz. I started teaching. Still do. Thanks Larry. Thanks Shaboo.

I among many others showed up one night due to a rumor that Bob Dylan was expected to appear. The headline performer was Leonard Cohen who sometime during his set said self-deprecatingly that he knew many were expecting the rooster, but instead would have to settle for the coo coo bird. Al Cooper and his band played, and think the second set, he dramatically pulled off his head a curly wig ... and he could play - what a performance. And Bonnie Raitt just hanging out at one of the small bars, checking out the people milling around in our stuper ... and just her looking was so intimidating ... she made be feel weak in the knees.

Thanks for the walk down memory lane. Loved those days and the bands that played at Shaboo. One of my favorite nights there in the early 70's was when Tower of Power performed there. It was just plain luck that my girlfriend and I got to be right in front of the band when they played. The sound was incredible! Garibaldi on drums, Rocco Prestia on bass Doc and the rest of the fantastic group made for a fond memorable evening. Does anybody remember the group Cold Blood? I haven't heard this group mentioned in any of the posts but I am pretty sure I saw Lydia Pense and Cold Blood there as well. That was another night of great music.

I have to agree with all the others. Miss the place. Saw some great shows. Todd Rundgren, what was with the magician warm up act??? John Miles, Joan Jett, the Cars, and so many others. Great venues like The Shaboo and West Hartford's Stage West are just a memory. Toad's is still kicking but lacks the power acts of years gone by.

We actually saw Todd Rundgren playing a concert in West Hartford in early 70's.
He was actually wearing what looked like a Diaper on him. Crazy but funny,
Yeah was a great club. My best friend's brother was also a partner/owner of Shaboo.
Does anyone know Denny Gatto? He's a really nice guy. Handsome too.

While there are a couple of unofficial "live" albums recorded at The Shaboo (Miles Davis - Jan. 26, 1974, for one, as well as J. B. Hutto & The New Hawks from 1979) THIS is a complete Early Show/Late Show combo of Tom Waits appearance Under the Water Tower in Storrs on Nov. 9, 1976 featuring Mr. Waits in full Heart of Saturday Night/Nighthawks at the Diner mode...my favourite period of his...

I loved the Hedges. Always found a willing lady to come to my hippie van during the band's break, only to never return. Loads of FUN !

Saw many good shows there. Arlo Guthrie and Shenendoah, Earl Scruggs Review, NRBQ countless times and many more fabulous bands. Had many a great time at Shaboo Inn. Went to buy a beer at the bar and the bartender passed me a joint. Don't know how we made it back to Hartford on some of those nights. Will always fondly remember the Shaboo and all the great bands I saw there.
