Should coal export through Washington be encouraged?

Major coal mining interests of North America have launched a concerted campaign to see vast amounts of coal exported through Pacific Northwest ports and terminals to markets in the Far East.

These corporations cite revenues and jobs that will accrue from coal export activities and facilities.

But they fail to recognize or admit the environmental impacts of coal trains across Washington, as well as the potential environmental harm of vast export terminals such as the Gateway Pacific Terminal now being planned for Cherry Point near Bellingham.

Any concerned citizen living in a Puget Sound community, including Coupeville, Washington, should be aware of Big Coal's plans for the Pacific Northwest.

Is coal export to the Far East through Washington a good idea?

I have expressed my opinion in this matter in the following statements.
