BRUNSWICK - A judge sentenced Peggy Edenfield to 60 years in prison Thursday after she pleaded guilty to five of eight charges in the sexual abuse slaying of 6-year-old Christopher Michael Barrios Jr. four years ago.
The state dismissed two felony murder charges as part of the negotiated plea made over objections from Christopher's father, Mike Barrios, and grudging acceptance from Christopher's paternal grandmother, Sue Rodriguez.
Edenfield, 62, pleaded guilty but mentally retarded to false imprisonment, child molestation for masturbating while Christopher was molested and choked to death, second-degree cruelty to children, concealing the death of another and tampering with evidence. A second child molestation count was merged into the one she pleaded guilty to.
Superior Court Judge Stephen Scarlett, at the recommendation of prosecutors, sentenced her to the maximum on each charge, which adds up to 60 years in prison.
Edenfield, who a state psychologist said has an IQ of 62, made the last-minute plea deal during what was to have been her final hearing before her trial beginning Sept. 26.
Immediately after Scarlett imposed the sentence, Peggy Edenfield's sister, Sharon Phillips jumped up in the audience and shouted that Edenfield's lawyer, Richard Allen, has only seen her sister twice in the nearly five years she's been jailed awaiting trial and had left her essentially defenseless.
"She doesn't even get a chance to defend herself?" Phillips yelled.
Jail records, however, show that Allen repeatedly visited Edenfield throughout her incarceration. Allen attempted to respond to Phillips' accusations but Scarlett silenced him to try to prevent the situation from escalating.
Phillips also accused Glynn County police Capt. Marissa Tindale of spraying Lysol on her sister while questioning her about Christopher's disappearance and death.
At that point, Rodriguez leapt to her feet on the other side of the courtroom and shouted at Phillips, "What about Christopher?"
Taken aback, Phillips yelled, "I'm so sorry about that. It's not her fault. Peggy doesn't even know what an indictment means."

What Christopher went through in his last minutes of his life, is something that nobody should experience. Much less, a 6 year old child.
The Christians belief in free spirit, so that the Lord can tell the good ones from the bad ones. This might work in separating at the final hearing, but it certainly sucks when a 6 year old is the subject making that decision.

May the Lord help us all cope not only with Christopher's death, but the millions of children sexually molested yearly in this miserable world.

She knew that her husband and son were molesting the boy and she knew that they killed the boy and she knew she played with herself watching them do these things to the boy. So really, does it matter if she knows what an indictment is??

She knew enough to know that watching the boy get molested, tortured and killed made her horny enough to finger herself and she knew it made her feel good.

Now, she may finger helself while she has the rest of her life in "timeout".

The sad part of this sentence is that this scumbag will probably enjoy prison. How wonderful for her to be locked up with a bunch of other sick twisted individuals, and have a roof over your head and food and clothing. She will have to get placed in a special facility to protect her from the inmates that would like to rip her to shreds for what she did. Such is our system of "justice".

Even the death penalty wouldn't be enough punishment for this evil. She deserved it more than her husband and son, in my opinion. Why? Because she is a mother! No mother could ever harm an innocent child like that. I hope that woman rots in hell....slowly.

its so sad all around... if the woman had an i.q. of 62, isn't that serious retardation? i hope God will have mercy on her soul -- if the deep truth was known, i bet anything that she was molested or raped at some point in her life too.(i'm not suggesting any excuse, just saying that its sad how evil spirals and cycles in lives). did anyone get the death penalty? whoever did the strangling or helped to do it should already be facing God. no cruel torture as some have suggested, just a speedy firing squad. very speedy. publickly too, maybe with mandatory attendance for all registered sex offenders to watch so they can know what they'll get if they ever do something like that.
