If you have an opinion about the current state of Pennsylvania’s whitetail deer population or you just want to read the words of others who do then read this blog and get one man’s perspective on the subject.

I hunt deer and drive rural roads daily. During both activities, I see less deer. I have killed deer during hunting season with a rifle and at other times by accident with my car. The cost of doing both is on the rise. Hunters and the Pennsylvania Game Commission are at odds about deer management objectives. Where do you stand?

You could sit and debate this subject all day long but till you get rid the self serving members of the Game Commission board of directors it won't change. Just like everything else it's all about the bottom line. If there's NO deer in the woods they can't get hit on the road or eat a tree so guess what?? I'm 63 years old and have been hunting Potter Co. since I was 9. I've seen the hay days of deer hunting and now I see what money can do to a deer herd. Everyone in Potter County is feeling a negitive impact from the deer population except those in the timber and insurance business. A good education is a great thing but good old common sence is better by far. The Pa. Game Commission has more common sence than most other organizations in the state but that's only because they've never used a damn bit of it.It may be too late to turn things around but I know one sure way to start the ball rolling. If for just one year we would stand togeather and NOT buy any type of Pa. hunting license the Game Commission would be bankrupt. You just stop and figure out that we the sportsmen and hunters are the one's funding this nonsence. Everyone sits and complains but the Game Commission sells 800,000 doe license's every year and who's buyin em ? At an average of $10.00 each that's 8 million $$ they have to fund their "Deer Management Program" The Game Commission is just like Social Security, they both started out as a good thing till the wrong people got involved and now we're seeing the results. Only WE can make any changes but WE would have to stick togeather and I don't see that happening. As the old saying goes, "WE'RE MAKIN OUR OWN BED" and it's gettin harder to sleep in every year. Stop and think what we're doing to ourselves and the young hunters that may not have anything to hunt. This is probably a waste of time and effort, but I feel better anyway. Always remember the good old days when Potter County was know across the US as the deer captial of the country. Never Again will that be the case.
