Full story: Public Opinion

Some time ago, I wrote a letter to the editor defending the Freedom of Choice Act, which makes it possible for women to have an abortion if they choose.

It takes two to tango, Tschopps. You've left out the mindset in young women, really young women, who want to have a baby out of wedlock just to have a child.

I agree 110% with the Tschopps. The Pro-Lifers say "have the baby and give it up for adoption", yet the orphanages are overflowing with children, so that's not the answer, either.

Then there's the California nit-wit who already has SIX children, no husband, and she gave birth to EIGHT more children. Do you doubt that all 15 will be supported by taxpayers via welfare and other programs? In her case, the medical clinic that implanted the eggs bear responsibility for helping to bring eight babies into the world.

Wow! I am astonished after all the progress that women have made in the last 100 years in the USA to read this piece. It tell me women are passive, uneducated, subservient, and submissive. They get pregnant because they truly have no control over men or themselves. I do not know the Tschopps or the circle they travel in. I do know that I know no women who are the passive dolts they have described.

Pregnancy, except in rare cases, is truly a joint effort. With all the forms of birth control available today, unwanted pregnancies should be very rare. Thus, the need for abortions (other than for very specific reasons) as the method of birth control of last resort is a conversation that the nation should not need to have.

To put it another way, the need for abortion is directly the result of TWO folks acting irresponsibly. When we stop being a group of self-absorbed, entitled people and get back to acting responsibly, the need for an abortion debate will history.

Even if your fantasy world of two people always using contraception during sex was realistic, let's do the math.(these numbers are arbitrary but based on published data).

50 million sexually active couples nationally.
2.4 billion sex acts a year (four per month per couple)
100 percent use of contraception.
99 percent success rate of contraception.
24 million contraception failures.
25 percent of failures result in pregnancy.
6 million unplanned pregnancies per year.
Assume half choose to carry to term.
3 million abortion demands per year.

Do the math.

Ah, T Bone, I was waiting for that one. Babies? Most abortions are done way, waaaaaay before the FETUS could make a choice. And if you believe that abortion is wrong (and for all the rest of you who do), please feel free to have all abortions banned and then you can all adopt the BABIES.

The thing about pro-lifers is that they don't want abortion, but they don't want contraception either! "Abstinence only!" is what they say. You can't fight thousands of years of human nature and just expect people NOT to do it just because you tell them it's wrong. If the pro-lifers had their way, the world would be much worse-off. The incidence of Illegal abortions or worse, self-inflicted abortions, or even WORSE. dumpster-babies would sky rocket.

The Tschopps claim rape & incest are the salient causes of pregnant females. How big is the slice of total pregnancies in a year do rape and incest constitute? Is it 1%, 2%, a higher number? How large is the slice, Tschopps? Have you given too much weight to rape and incest in your argument? How large is the number of pregnancies in the unmarried inner city community? You know, those that are addressed by President Obama, Bill Cosby, and others.

It seems to me a majority of people against abortion make "moral" arguements based on religious beliefs. I boil it down to the ol' "every human has value" theory (yeah, right). Therefore, an abortion is essentially depriving us of the next greatest American.

This type of people have no clue as the the true nature of humanity. And they are clinging to a belief that we need to make more and more christians, catholics, etc regardless of how those people will actually live.

The letter is dead on. Abortion is a family decision, not one for society.

Unfortunately, I have to agree with you on that one. That is pro-life to an extreme; maybe jtb will marry her and help support the children.

You can also blame the doctors. Most women who take birth control pills know that they are 99% effective. But the doctors don't tell them (either when prescribing birth control pills or prescribing antibiotics) that antibiotics can make birth control pills much less effective. Therefore, an uninformed woman who thinks she is being responsible and protecting herself gets a "surprise" pregnancy.

The pro-lifers think that she should carry that baby to term anyhow. If she didn't want to be pregnant and was doing her best to prevent pregnancy, but was not informed of possible weaknesses in coverage, why should she be forced to be pregnant against her will? She STILL doesn't want to be pregnant!

I seriously doubt that abortion will ever be banned.

I thought it was broadcast that the family is very well off and is planning on taking care of the babies on their own. The woman used her "pro-choice" right to choose to have all the babies even though the doctors recommended that most be aborted. It's not society's right to make the decision for the individual and this is a good example of it.

'''The truth is that men are the cause of the need for abortions......'''

''' and immature men or boys who are eager to satisfy their animal instincts and entice females to have sex any way they can.......'''

You expose yourself with those statements!

Your parochial attitude that women are helplless, dimwitted, and uninformed to the point that any male can induce a pregnancy doesn't fit in with the prochoice/feminist movement that believes women are strong independant persons that dan and do make their own choices, does it?

It takes two to tango.

That's not to say that bad 'choices' are made everyday!

Daily Horoscope for December 14

Virgo

It's a great day for doing some Christmas shopping. You've got the stamina to fight your way round the shops and the interest to see what's on offer when you get there. However, you'll be very tempted to buy whatever you see first and only look at the price tag later, which could turn out to be a very expensive tactic.
