I have a friend who recently served time in the Cocke County jail, and he had all sorts of horror stories, including assault by other inmates as well as officers, and forced boxing between inmates by officers. Someone needs to look into this...

I'm sure anyone would let a couple people tie them up and cram a toothpaste container up their butthole for a million bucks. I know I would! He's hit the jackpot on this ordeal, if he wins.

One would think as much "business" as that jail sees they would have their shit together. It operated for years without accreditation and insurance. If Fontes plans to "clean up the streets" he should do some cleaning in his own house first. That jail is overpopulated, understaffed and many of the people put in position of corrections officer are underpaid, sparsely equipped and poorly trained, the latter of which is a danger to the inmates as well as the officers themselves. It's a small miracle that anyone would want to work under those conditions, which probably explains the quality of a portion of the staff. They pay these officers cents over minimum wage, make them buy most of their own gear and then hand them the keys. No huge mystery why drugs and other contraband ends up in the hands of the inmates and criminal acts are the rule and not the exception, when the wathchdogs get paid the same as burger flippers.

It's a sad state of affairs. If it weren't for all the glory hounds lining up to work there thinking it'll be their "foot-in-the-door" to get on the road with the county, maybe they would have to pay a little more to get people to work there. But as it stands now they could probably operate 24/7/365 just with volunteers/reserves. Union help is not an option either, since those who are using the job solely as a stepping stone couldn't care less about pay or benefits, and unionization only works with the power gained from a majority. It's not uncommon for jailers and road officers as well to be forced to seek public assistance to supplement their lack of income. That's a scary thought.

they know what it pays when they take the job...so selling drugs is no excuse. armondo has said we need a new jail. but there is no money available for that. and prison is a cruel place. i have known people who have done time. it aint a country club. if you can't do the time, don't do the crime.

The job market is in the toilet. Knowing the pay is shitty isn't going to stop someone from taking the job if the alternative is starving. Also a person could end up in the annex for an unpaid traffic citation. Getting some sweet butt-play from the home team for forgetting to pay for a broken tail light isn't time for crime. As for needing a new jail, communities all over the country are privatizing their corrections facilities. Shiny new jails with a zero tax payer price tag. I wonder if we have enough crime around here to lure in one of those companies?

Privatize the jail. You pay millions of dollars into the county's economic development agency and what jobs do you get out of it? None. Making the jail private would at least pay a better wage.
