Are there any poets in Corvallis? If so, let's see some talent. I know it's here.

My heart and my mind go to nineteen-seventy
about a person I thought was heavenly.
I never knew her, or met her, or even got a wink.
But from hundreds of miles away, she taught me how to think.
Before I read her story, my life was hyper-critical
And then I saw my turbulence, and became quite analytical
I'd see things through her eyes, and knew that I must learn
to understand folks' lives, and see why I so yearn
to open my darkest thoughts and bring them all to the light
and see them for myself as other people might.
I'm not much into this, as anyone can see
but I must write this down as it comes to me.
I used to go to a school, one that we called Bear Creek.
I tried my hand at poetry, which to say the least was weak.
I took the laughter at my effort as a debilitating insult
and ignored the advice of one, that I could get a better result.
He asked who I knew that I could really look up to
I couldn't think of one until I thought of you.
As I look back into the past, I've come to it this hour
The one who gets the nod is Katherine Ann Power.

Wow! That's a powerful poem. Katherine Ann Power was a woman that was romantacized back in 1970, along with Angela Davis, Susan Saxe, Bernadette Dohrn and other rebel women. Power was responsible in part for the death of a policeman in Boston in that year. She was born and raised in Denver. A Brinks robbery that was stopped by the cop that was killed. Power was the getaway driver and she did get away. Evidently, she lived in some sort of hippie commune for some time before meeting the man that would later become her husband. She changed her name before they met and he had no clue as to what was going on until right before she turned herself in to authorities in Massachusetts. She had some pretty close ties to the weather underground. Stories about her having ties to the Simbianese Liberation Army and Charles Manson have proven to be in error, but she was definitely a heluva radical, that's for sure. But as far as I can tell, she didn't pull the trigger that killed that cop in Boston. She was rumored to be hanging out with someone that attended Bear Creek High School in January & February of 1972 with a boy that was from Pennsylvania, but nothing ever became of that either. Nobody was ever found at Bear Creek that ever lived in Pennsylvania at that time.

My goodness! What a poem! Pretty radical if you ask me. And just as deep. Maybe she has an even bigger grasp on the minds of some young people than anyone first thought. I never heard of Katherine Ann Power until I read this. The Volcano is right in what (s)he wrote about her involvement with that Massachusetts murder. As for that Bear Creek boy, I don't know anything about that, but it sure is interesting. And if true, a strange "connection" between a school in Colorado and a kid from Pennsylvania. How can a kid from Pennsylvania go to school in Colorado every day? They didn't even have an internet back then, and I never even heard of high school correspondence courses, then or now. So what gives? Somebody, please explain.
