Berea, KY

My family and I are wanting to move out of KY in the next few months - I just graduated from college in KY and we have to get out of this state - we can't stand it here any longer. We're looking at Corvallis as a place to move to live for a while. Any input on the town? We have two small children as well? We're mainly interested in job opportunities, housing costs, safety...and the weather. Winter in KY is unbearable. Any input is appreciated.

LOL that's funny cause i was born in KY and I'll tell you, if your a little upset about the cold and snow in kentucky...Oregon is probably not for you. I'll have to say it's a crazy year this time though. I live in corvallis and it's only been frost, rain and sunshine this entire winter...but everywhere else in the state is snowing mostly if 1400 feet above sea level. Thankfully Corvallis isn't. In Eastern Oregon you can get snow drifts 3-8 feet deep, but makes great for snowboards or skiing. Anyways I'll just let you know, Oregon is a Engineers kind of state. There is HP and Nelcro near corvallis, Intel and Google in portland area, and lots of science engineering businesses. We're called the Silicon Tree much like Silicon Valley. I'll warn you, I've seen many folks post they moved to Oregon but didn't know we hardly have any jobs available. Last time i heard our unemployment was 12%. We had to pass legislation to allow extra unemployment funds to be used to pay for people who didn't have jobs. last time i looked for a job it took 6 months, then i lost it after 3 months when housing crashed, and then luckily i fell into another job a month later. So don't move here unless you have the job offer and have accepted. Just fair warning. Pretty much Oregon is had a lot of trouble with paper and wood mills, and businesses that are hurting have been liquidating staff...sooo like i said, be sure. As for corvallis, you'd live much better outside of the town. it's a college town and rent is a lot. I say you could be happy either in Albany, Monroe, Philomath, or Lebanon. All are 30 minutes time from eachother. Tangent is right smack in the middle of them all and close to interstate to Eugene or Portland. Walmart is in Lebanon, Winco is in Corvallis, Target is in Albany, and there are tons of internet providers local and corporate too. Peak internet DSL and Wireless, Comcast Broadband Cable, Qwest MSN DSL, and more. Power company is Pacific Power and I like them a lot, I can always call late at night and get someone in oregon who can explain my bill to me. Hope this helps
