Security was compromised during the affected guards time on duty, had an attempt to void security occured at this time the guards may have not responded properly.
This shows that the testing works, however to say that this incident did not compromise security is not correct. Also to give a 2 week suspension with pay is not the way to end drug use by guards at nuclear faculities.Just another way unions have hurt out nuclear industry.

One more reason to shut the place down before something happens there we can't run away from... 20 million people aren't worth the risk for a measly 200Mw we could be producing a myriad of other ways... buy LED bulbs, let's get this over with.

Guards with coke in their systems do not need jobs at a nuclear plant. Fire them. Forget the union and fire the idiots. The firing does not have to be because drugs were found in their system - it can be for demonstrated gross stupidity. Anyone working in the nuclear industry that thinks they will not get caught has absolutely demonstrated their stupidity. FIRE THEM.

To Fire Them,You got it right. The NRC will do and say anything to assure the public that there was no dangerous situation caused due to the guards testing positive for drugs. They also said that the leaks reported last year wasn't a hazzard to the public.I'm sure we will never know the truth as to what is really happening at this plant or any nuclear reactor currently operating or shutdown.

A factor of ten error. It is ironic that you regard that as the "same" as 200MW. Innumeracy of that type is fairly normal in anti-nuclear-power thinking.

Even if 80% of NY electricity were supplied by nuclear, I doubt you would see any difference, and demand the shutdown of the plants with an airy wave of your hands without any real idea what is required to supply that amount of power.

Indian Point simply cannot fail in the way that you are pretending here. The containment and multiple barriers cannot produce the kind of threat that you conjure out of nothing to try to prop up your argument. The 20 million people are at risk of nothing right now. The closure of Indian Point might be balanced by cutting off electricity to those 20 million people's homes for 6 hours a day - and that would carry far more risk.

Some years back the people of Long Island did not want a nuclear plant and arranged for the state to buy and dismantle Shoreham. NYC and Orange County do not want Indian Point. How about we simply cut all transmission and distribution lines going into NYC, Orange County, and Long Island? Let the people that live and work there live off the electricity they generate using whatever means of generation they want. No nukes - no problem. No coal - no problem. No electricity - not my problem.
Then again why stop at the grid? Let the residents create a new state - this will solve their Albany problem and at the same time solve a lot of Albany's problems.

How many stupid people do you know that have never done coke ...lol?? Drug abuse and stupidity are mutually exclusive ya maroon. If you're searhing for a good reason to close Indian Point this doesn't qualify. If you're suggesting an alternative form of energy Einstein, let's hear all about that instead!!

My earlier comment and assertion was the two guards should be fired for gross stupidity. Anyone working in the nuclear industry knows there are drug tests administered. You don't get a job and site access initially if there are drugs in your system so why believe adding them later is OK.

My real rant here is there is a possibility these people will go to "rehab" for a couple weeks, pee clean once, and then be back on the job. I will reiterate my underlying argument - these people are too stupid to entrust with unescorted access to a nuclear power plant and should be fired.

What I'm saying is there are many more stupid people working at Indian Point who don't do drugs, don't get caught and plant safety doesn't rely on them either. One has nothing to do w/the other. The SHOCK value of Homer Simpson snorting lines off of the nuke console triggers a headline but it doesn't the approach the nuke issues. Are they safe or not? What alternative forms of energy are ready to take their place?

Rest assured these characters will get a second chance, just like everyone, and you won't hear a thing about it...:^)

The facts of the case are these.... the closure of the plant is on the board and realistic risk analyses and replacement power will have no sway in the matter among a largely energy-illiterate public. Bugaboo headlines will trump objective facts any day. The scare is in and the only thing that will unscare the public is rotating blackouts and brownouts.
