Cuisine scene: Tiny cupcakes are big in Marin

Our cupcake will soon runneth over. Where we've barely had cupcakes outside of a few available in bakeries such as Comfort's in San Anselmo and Fat Angel in Fairfax, now the county will have three stores where ...

Teacake Bakeshop's cupcakes are heaven! The coconut cupcake (available on Fridays, only) is especially divine!

Does this signal a downward trend in the health-consciousness of marinites? Two sugar-based companies opening in the same town seems surprising. Or maybe it's for the tourists...

Melody J you are kidding, right? Jeez I hope so! Sugar-based companies are bad? They don't belong in Marin? Lighten up and have a cupcake - my favorite cupcakes are made by Comfort's in San Anselmo. The cake is fresh and light and the frosting w/the coconut on top is divine.

I didn't say they were bad--I personally enjoy the occasional cupcake, but rarely purchase them (usually a homemade treat).

I was just surprised that there would be so much demand for specialized bakeries and sweet shops in such a health-conscious area. Maybe that's because we when we want to treat ourselves, we like to do it right.

Or...if I take the philosophical route--it's yet another symptom of hypocritical human nature. I believe Marin also has the highest per capita of 12 step groups, all sorts of fast food restaurants, and Starbucks galore.

And that's just talking food and drink. I dare not go into the irony of the county's liberal politics and its extreme materialism (mansions, expensive cars, fine dining, outrageously priced "educational" programs for kids).

One analyzes these sorts of things when having lived here their entire life and yet not being part of the actual culture (not rich, not liberal). Or at least I do :)

This is the very attitude I'm talking about, and it's right in Mill Valley:
