"enhance access to basic informational services"?

seriously? All of the major networks broadcast for free.... now, I'd be for providing those set-top boxes for the new digital broadcasts to ensure that everyone gets the signal, but come on, you don't need cable to get the news!! what a crock.

Depends on where you are. We tried to do with out cable for the first year . We could get one channel kinda fuzzy and the others had this horrible fax noise canceling out the sound. Eventually we had to sell our soul to be comcastic.

Cable television uses public rights of way to distribute its lines. Government has a duty to help assure that all citizens have equitable access

Can't believe that this is even being discussed. My wife and I both have to work and pay for our cable service. No one is giving us a cut rate on cable, in fact the price has gone up with the reduction of service. Maybe if low income people had to move away from the t.v. they could spend more time being productive. What happened to putting rabbit ears on top of the t.v. set. Enough is enough, use the money for schools, not for cable t.v.
I realize that this is an OLD post, but this was such a stupid comment. First of all..........Where have you been?? TV has gone digital!! I used rabbit ears for years. THEN, thanks to BUSH and friends, TV went digital. No longer can you get free tv without a digital converter; OR so they say> I went and got my digital converter. It doesn't work. I could only get PBS> Granted, that is some good programming, but it hardly gives me the whole picture. No networks. No NBC, No ABC or CBS or FOX or UPN, etc.....AND i lived in a major area. Seatac. One mile from a major international airport and halfway between Seattle and Tacoma washington (hence the name, SeaTac) So, it's not like I was in the boonies.
How is that right?? Wake up idiot. Since I became disabled I have to live on disability of 1000 a month. I would love to be making 60K a year again. Believe me. Being poor has opened my eyes to a world I never knew anything about, and never wanted to. My attitude was not so different from yours.
Be thankful for what you have but don't resent those with less. NOBODY wants to be poor. Very few people are paid what they're worth. And there aren't enough jobs to go around. That isn't the fault of those less fortunate than you. THat is the fault of those who have more than they could spend in a thousand lifes and still want more.
This could be a good world for everyone. If we all tried to make it that way.

Not trying to be mean, but stop watching TV, there's nothing worth watching on it that you can't find on the internet.
Get a good used radio and toss a wire antenna into a tree.

But You're spot-on, as I posted earlier on a simular post, that sort of "disapeared" is that HDTV is totally free for anyone who has an antenna, it's no secret, even though Comcast would like to see it kept a secret, I imagine.
Rather than give a cheaper rate to low-income Folks, give Them a voucher for a simple antenna set-up. It would be a one-time deal, as One would never have to buy another antenna, unless it's outside/roof mounted, and there's a huge storm/lightening, or whatever.
The "New" HDTV is beinging broadcasted over the air, and Anyone can get it for FREE.
Although I detest TV, from what I know is the old analog TV if the signal is poor would give You a poor quality picture/audio, but HDTV, if the signal is poor, You get nothing, but if You can get the signal, usually it's pretty clear, and of good quality.
Commander can you elaborate on the HDTV antenna. What, How, the particulars even Where if possible.

The antenna design is the same, rabbit ears, an outdoor yagi, or a bent coat hanger, You just need the converter from analog to digital.
That old antenna on Your house in Your pics would have worked if the coax/balun were'nt damaged by th elements.

this is what happens when liberal activists get a job in government
always looking to create another entitlement and subsidy for increasingly non essential services
and who do you think will make up the revenue comcast looses?
it will be reallocated to the productive members of society

Only people who have not experienced a low income think we want free cable.I have spent the last 45 yrs looking after other people,s kids paid my taxes and raised a son who is now a lawyer. I am also british born and raised on national health care We are the only country in the free world who does not take care of its own.

Why should I as a senior not get a break on cable I have paid them enough for years . I have seem parents spend more on toys than the elderly.

We did our bit for this country so unless you walk a mile in my shoes you have no idea what you are talking about.
For example I a 65 still have a mortgage and get.$900 a month on ss and my husband gets 700 our mortgage is $11.000 medicare takes $208
A month for medicare then there is medicine v my husband pays $300 a month so you do the math and tell me why I cannot have a cable discount . For god sake what else do you want to take from us.
