Full story: Santa Cruz Sentinel

Well then inquiring minds ought to look up the 990 and financial reports which are public information.

Then, inquiring minds could look up the tax records for the grocery store and learn that food and money is donated, not sold.

If inquiring minds really want to know, then inquiring minds could *gasp* volunteer next year and learn first hand. What a concept.

Get the chip off your shoulder. I have volunteered there almost every year, including the very first year. I have also been on the money side of things. Monte has paid the costs of "extra manpower". He does not reap any financial benefits, in fact, it's a money loser for him. On top of putting together the entire program, he also donates food and supplies. He pays a staff person to help manage this. Does Monte have a big ego? Sure. But why are you so down on someone who is actually doing something to help schools.

What, may I ask, are YOU doing other than whining in half a dozen posts every day?

Oh, and by the way, I'm an ex-liberal too.

God forbid anyone does anything good in this community. If you do, there are always people thinking that you're up to no good. Relax people, enjoy the good things in life and get rid of the negative in your thoughts, it only makes you look and feel ugly. Thanks Mr. Monte and all the others that give from their hearts.

Come on, this is a great event. I am so glad they dumped the "Hollywood" aspect, last year was not fun. It's so much nicer when its a family-style event. Take a look at the pubic records for the event, Monte gives so much to help our schools.

I was there, The "vendors" are obviously moms, dads, sons, daughters, teachers. PCS had good hamburgers, girlscouts had good cotton-candy. Got cheese sandwiches somewhere else and pretty good portobello mushroom sandwich. Hot chocolate and coffee. Definitely *all* volunteer - community pulling together to raise money on their own and not raising taxes. No one is en-richening themselves. Best firework show in the county I've ever seen. YOu may be ex-liberal - but your definitely still a richard!

Why? What's it to you anyhow? How about we audit your bank account and see how much you donate to charity. How much of your time do you volunteer to local schools?

Are you jealous that someone has stepped forward to help schools raise money? As I said in my earlier post, in addition to organizing the event for the past 16 years, he also donates food & supplies. He does this all year, not just for the event. In addition to donating he allows schools to purchase at cost. The State of California doesn't even do that.

I remember at the beginning of the fireworks he was praised. Then when they grew to school outside of Aptos he was accused of doing it so he could run for office. Well, it's 16 years later and he hasn't stepped forward to do so. Then it was that he was reaping big financial benefits, which is where you seem to be stuck.

As a parent who has been there from the beginning, I can only say you are way off the mark.

Get off your high horse and appreciate someone for doing some good at the local level.

What other charity spends a full 100k to raise 200k? And what a great reason for the Sentinel to offer free daily advertising for a big client.
The 300k could go to a better planned, cheaper event such as a music concert. The performers would donate their time. It would be almost all profit.
But fireworks feels good to our lizard brains! So screw the environment! It beats paying property taxes for education!
Thanks for your time. Oh yeah, Jesus was a liberal.

I cannot believe anyone THOUGHT that adding more housing in Seacliff was a good idea. Traffic is a mess. Streets are dark, most have no sidewalks and many steets allow one car to move in one direction AND ITS A TWO LANE STREET !!! Glad it was on friday, get it over with.
